In recent years, great emphasis has been placed on the role of arterial stiffness in the development of cardiovascular diseases. Indeed, the assessment of arterial stiffness is increasingly used in the clinical assessment of patients. Although several papers have previously addressed the methodological issues concerning the various indices of arterial stiffness currently available, and their clinical applications, clinicians and researchers still report difficulties in selecting the most appropriate methodology for their specific use. This paper summarizes the proceedings of several meetings of the European Network for Non-invasive Investigation of Large Arteries and is aimed at providing an updated and practical overview of the most relevant methodological aspects and clinical applications in this area.read more

Arterial Stiffness Is Associated With Regional Ventricular Systolic and Diastolic Dysfunction: The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis

TL;DR: Arterial stiffness is associated with early and asymptomatic impairment of systolic as well as diastolic myocardial function and further studies are needed to elucidate role of vascular compliance in the development of ventricular dysfunction and failure.

Cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) as an indicator of arterial stiffness.
TL;DR: Assessment of arterial stiffness using CAVI is used to aid in early detection of arteriosclerosis to allow timely treatment and change in lifestyle, but also to quantitatively evaluate the progression of disease and the effectiveness of treatment.

TL;DR: This study will provide a wealth of epidemiological and biomarker data that should be invaluable in the identification of potentially modifiable, causal risk factors for diabetes-related cognitive impairment, liver dysfunction and vascular disease, which can be targeted for the development of preventive and therapeutic interventions.

E-cigarettes and cigarettes worsen peripheral and central hemodynamics as well as arterial stiffness: A randomized, double-blinded pilot study.
Klaas Franzen,Johannes Willig,Silja Cayo Talavera,Moritz Meusel,Friedhelm Sayk,Michael Reppel,Klaus Dalhoff,Kai Mortensen,Daniel Droemann +8 more
TL;DR: In this first of its kind trial, changes in peripheral and central blood pressure and also in pulse wave velocity after smoking a cigarette as well as after vaping a nicotine-containing electronic cigarette are observed and may be associated with an increased long-term cardiovascular risk.

Exposure to wood smoke increases arterial stiffness and decreases heart rate variability in humans
Jon Unosson,Anders Blomberg,Thomas Sandström,Ala Muala,Christoffer Boman,Robin Nyström,Roger Westerholm,Nicholas L. Mills,David E. Newby,Jeremy P. Langrish,Jenny A. Bosson +10 more
TL;DR: Acute exposure to wood smoke as a model of exposure to biomass combustion is associated with an immediate increase in central arterial stiffness and a simultaneous reduction in heart rate variability.

TL;DR: In those older than age 50, systolic blood pressure of greater than 140 mm Hg is a more important cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factor than diastolic BP, and hypertension will be controlled only if patients are motivated to stay on their treatment plan.

Prevention of cardiovascular events with an antihypertensive regimen of amlodipine adding perindopril as required versus atenolol adding bendroflumethiazide as required, in the Anglo-Scandinavian Cardiac Outcomes Trial-Blood Pressure Lowering Arm (ASCOT-BPLA): a multicentre randomised controlled trial

TL;DR: The amlodipine-based regimen prevented more major cardiovascular events and induced less diabetes than the atenolol- based regimen, and these effects might not be entirely explained by better control of blood pressure.
