TLDR
In this paper, the authors summarized the proceedings of several meetings of the European Network for Non-invasive Investigation of Large Arteries and aimed at providing an updated and practical overview of the most relevant methodological aspects and clinical applications in this area.Abstract:
In recent years, great emphasis has been placed on the role of arterial stiffness in the development of cardiovascular diseases. Indeed, the assessment of arterial stiffness is increasingly used in the clinical assessment of patients. Although several papers have previously addressed the methodological issues concerning the various indices of arterial stiffness currently available, and their clinical applications, clinicians and researchers still report difficulties in selecting the most appropriate methodology for their specific use. This paper summarizes the proceedings of several meetings of the European Network for Non-invasive Investigation of Large Arteries and is aimed at providing an updated and practical overview of the most relevant methodological aspects and clinical applications in this area.read more

Imaging Insights on the Aorta in Aging
TL;DR: The pathophysiological aspects of the aorta and the ability, value, and prospects of cardiovascular imaging, especially magnetic resonance imaging, to study age-related changes in aortic structure and function and assess the relationship between these alterations and cardiovascular disease are described.

Central wave reflection is associated with peripheral arterial resistance in addition to arterial stiffness in subjects without antihypertensive medication
Matias Wilenius,Antti Tikkakoski,Anna Tahvanainen,Antti Haring,Jenni Koskela,Heini Huhtala,Mika Kähönen,Tiit Kööbi,Jukka Mustonen,Ilkka Pörsti +9 more
TL;DR: Augmentation index is strongly associated with systemic vascular resistance in addition to arterial stiffness, and pulse wave velocity was not a significant explanatory variable for augmentation index.

Lower lifetime dietary fiber intake is associated with carotid artery stiffness: the Amsterdam Growth and Health Longitudinal Study
Roel J. van de Laar,Coen D.A. Stehouwer,Bas C T van Bussel,Saskia J. te Velde,Martin H. Prins,Jos W. R. Twisk,Isabel Ferreira +6 more
TL;DR: Lower lifetime intake of fiber during the course of young age is associated with carotid artery stiffness in adulthood, and promoting consumption of fiber-rich foods among the young may offer a means to prevent accelerated arterial stiffening in adulthood and related cardiovascular sequelae.

Arterial stiffness is associated to cardiorespiratory fitness and body mass index in young Swedish adults: The Lifestyle, Biomarkers, and Atherosclerosis study:
TL;DR: The observed U-shaped association between pulse wave velocity and body mass index categories in women indicates that it might be more beneficial to be normal weight than underweight when assessing the arterial stiffness with pulseWave velocity.

Contribution of nitric oxide to the blood pressure and arterial responses to exercise in humans
TL;DR: It is suggested that NO is an important contributor to reductions in femoral artery stiffness after maximal exercise in healthy individuals, and acute pharmacological inhibition of NO synthase causes augmented BP responses to sub-maximal exercise, but does not lead to exaggerated BP response to maximal exercise or reduce maximal oxygen consumption.

TL;DR: The most effective therapy prescribed by the most careful clinician will control hypertension only if patients are motivated, and empathy builds trust and is a potent motivator.

TL;DR: In those older than age 50, systolic blood pressure of greater than 140 mm Hg is a more important cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factor than diastolic BP, and hypertension will be controlled only if patients are motivated to stay on their treatment plan.

Prevention of cardiovascular events with an antihypertensive regimen of amlodipine adding perindopril as required versus atenolol adding bendroflumethiazide as required, in the Anglo-Scandinavian Cardiac Outcomes Trial-Blood Pressure Lowering Arm (ASCOT-BPLA): a multicentre randomised controlled trial

TL;DR: The amlodipine-based regimen prevented more major cardiovascular events and induced less diabetes than the atenolol- based regimen, and these effects might not be entirely explained by better control of blood pressure.
