In recent years, great emphasis has been placed on the role of arterial stiffness in the development of cardiovascular diseases. Indeed, the assessment of arterial stiffness is increasingly used in the clinical assessment of patients. Although several papers have previously addressed the methodological issues concerning the various indices of arterial stiffness currently available, and their clinical applications, clinicians and researchers still report difficulties in selecting the most appropriate methodology for their specific use. This paper summarizes the proceedings of several meetings of the European Network for Non-invasive Investigation of Large Arteries and is aimed at providing an updated and practical overview of the most relevant methodological aspects and clinical applications in this area.read more

Cardiorespiratory interactions: Noncontact assessment using laser Doppler vibrometry
Erik J. Sirevaag,Sara Casaccia,Sara Casaccia,Edward A. Richter,Joseph A. O'Sullivan,Lorenzo Scalise,John W. Rohrbaugh +6 more
TL;DR: The application of a noncontact physiological recording technique, based on the method of laser Doppler vibrometry (LDV), is described, validated for a range of cardiovascular variables, extracted from the contour of the carotid pulse waveform as a function of phase of the respiration cycle.

Prediction of Cardiovascular Events With Aortic Stiffness in Patients With Erectile Dysfunction
Charalambos Vlachopoulos,Nikolaos C. Ioakeimidis,Konstantinos Aznaouridis,Dimitrios Terentes-Printzios,K. Rokkas,Athanasios Aggelis,D B Panagiotakos,Christodoulos Stefanadis +7 more
TL;DR: Results show that higher aortic stiffness is associated with increased risk for a MACE in patients with erectile dysfunction without known cardiovascular disease and may represent a valuable biomarker of prediction of cardiovascular disease risk in these patients.

TL;DR: Serum UA showed a positive correlation with the mean maximum intima-media thickness and PWV, and this parameter showed a negative correlation withThe central and peripheral augmentation indices, although this relationship was lost after adjusting for confounding factors.

TL;DR: In those older than age 50, systolic blood pressure of greater than 140 mm Hg is a more important cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factor than diastolic BP, and hypertension will be controlled only if patients are motivated to stay on their treatment plan.

Prevention of cardiovascular events with an antihypertensive regimen of amlodipine adding perindopril as required versus atenolol adding bendroflumethiazide as required, in the Anglo-Scandinavian Cardiac Outcomes Trial-Blood Pressure Lowering Arm (ASCOT-BPLA): a multicentre randomised controlled trial

TL;DR: The amlodipine-based regimen prevented more major cardiovascular events and induced less diabetes than the atenolol- based regimen, and these effects might not be entirely explained by better control of blood pressure.
