Abstract
In recent years, great emphasis has been placed on the role of arterial stiffness in the development of cardiovascular diseases. Indeed, the assessment of arterial stiffness is increasingly used in the clinical assessment of patients. Although several papers have previously addressed the methodological issues concerning the various indices of arterial stiffness currently available, and their clinical applications, clinicians and researchers still report difficulties in selecting the most appropriate methodology for their specific use. This paper summarizes the proceedings of several meetings of the European Network for Non-invasive Investigation of Large Arteries and is aimed at providing an updated and practical overview of the most relevant methodological aspects and clinical applications in this area.

Association of chronic periodontitis with left ventricular mass and central blood pressure in treated patients with essential hypertension.

TL;DR: More severe forms of periodontitis are associated with increased CBP and LVM in patients with primary hypertension, and a positive association was observed between CPITN values andLVM, LVMI, age, aortic systolic, and pulse pressure, but not with systemic blood pressure.

The pulsatile component of blood pressure – Its role in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis

TL;DR: Experimental studies indicate that there is a cause‐and‐effect type of relationship between the pulsatile component of blood pressure and atherosclerotic process, and the presence of a bidirectional link between atherosclerosis and PP is commonly postulated, meaning that an increased PP may be both a cause and an effect of Atherosclerosis.

The influence of obesity on arterial compliance in adult men and women

TL;DR: Obesity was associated with a decrease in large and small arterial compliance independent of conventional risk factors, and subcutaneous fat and fat around the hips were inversely related to arterial Compliance.

Lung function in mid-life compared with later life is a stronger predictor of arterial stiffness in men: The Caerphilly Prospective Study

TL;DR: Mid-life lung function is a stronger risk factor than in later life for arterial stiffness in men, and lung function assessment in mid-life may identify individuals at greater risk of their future cardiovascular disease.
Journal ArticleDOI

Blood pressure and pulse wave velocity as metrics for evaluating pathologic ageing of the cardiovascular system

TL;DR: Improved lifestyle and control of risk factors via appropriate drug therapy are of importance in providing vascular protection related to EVA, including members of risk families including subjects with early onset cardiovascular disease.

Aortic stiffness is an independent predictor of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in hypertensive patients.

TL;DR: This study provides the first direct evidence that aortic stiffness is an independent predictor of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in patients with essential hypertension.
