In recent years, great emphasis has been placed on the role of arterial stiffness in the development of cardiovascular diseases. Indeed, the assessment of arterial stiffness is increasingly used in the clinical assessment of patients. Although several papers have previously addressed the methodological issues concerning the various indices of arterial stiffness currently available, and their clinical applications, clinicians and researchers still report difficulties in selecting the most appropriate methodology for their specific use. This paper summarizes the proceedings of several meetings of the European Network for Non-invasive Investigation of Large Arteries and is aimed at providing an updated and practical overview of the most relevant methodological aspects and clinical applications in this area.read more

Carotid stiffness change over the cardiac cycle by ultrafast ultrasound imaging in healthy volunteers and vascular Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.
Tristan Mirault,Mathieu Pernot,Michael Frank,Mathieu Couade,R. Niarra,Michel Azizi,Joseph Emmerich,Xavier Jeunemaitre,Mathias Fink,Mickael Tanter,Emmanuel Messas +10 more
TL;DR: Ultrafast ultrasound imaging can evaluate carotid PWV and its variation over the cardiac cycle and could offer the opportunity to go beyond the diastolic PWV to better characterize arterial stiffness change with age or other collagen alterations.

Carotid Artery Stiffness as an Early Marker of Vascular Lesions in Children and Adolescents With Cardiovascular Risk Factors
Francisco Núñez,Cecilia Martínez-Costa,Julia Sánchez-Zahonero,Julia Morata,Francisco J. Chorro,Juan Brines +5 more
TL;DR: Ulasonographic measurement of arterial stiffness is a sensitive technique that can detect vascular damage in children with cardiovascular risk factors earlier than intima-media thickness measurement.

Coronary vessel wall contrast enhancement imaging as a potential direct marker of coronary involvement: integration of findings from CAD and SLE patients.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that quantification of coronary CE by CNR and total CE area is feasible for detection of subclinical and clinical uptake of gadolinium within the coronary vessel wall, a novel novel direct marker of vessel wall injury and remodeling in subpopulations at risk.

High aortic augmentation index predicts mortality and cardiovascular events in men from a general population, but not in women.
TL;DR: The findings support that AIx relates to CVD in men but question the value in women, and further studies are needed before AIx can be considered in CVD risk stratification or clinical practice.
Journal ArticleDOI
Neutrophil-Lymphocyte ratio is associated with arterial stiffness in diabetic retinopathy in type 2 diabetes
TL;DR: The findings showed that NLR and baPWV are elevated both in T2DM and in DR, and in addition, NLR is independently associated with baPwV.

TL;DR: The most effective therapy prescribed by the most careful clinician will control hypertension only if patients are motivated, and empathy builds trust and is a potent motivator.

TL;DR: In those older than age 50, systolic blood pressure of greater than 140 mm Hg is a more important cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factor than diastolic BP, and hypertension will be controlled only if patients are motivated to stay on their treatment plan.

Prevention of cardiovascular events with an antihypertensive regimen of amlodipine adding perindopril as required versus atenolol adding bendroflumethiazide as required, in the Anglo-Scandinavian Cardiac Outcomes Trial-Blood Pressure Lowering Arm (ASCOT-BPLA): a multicentre randomised controlled trial

TL;DR: The amlodipine-based regimen prevented more major cardiovascular events and induced less diabetes than the atenolol- based regimen, and these effects might not be entirely explained by better control of blood pressure.
