Abstract
In recent years, great emphasis has been placed on the role of arterial stiffness in the development of cardiovascular diseases. Indeed, the assessment of arterial stiffness is increasingly used in the clinical assessment of patients. Although several papers have previously addressed the methodological issues concerning the various indices of arterial stiffness currently available, and their clinical applications, clinicians and researchers still report difficulties in selecting the most appropriate methodology for their specific use. This paper summarizes the proceedings of several meetings of the European Network for Non-invasive Investigation of Large Arteries and is aimed at providing an updated and practical overview of the most relevant methodological aspects and clinical applications in this area.

Dynamic evaluation of renal resistive index in normoalbuminuric patients with newly diagnosed hypertension or type 2 diabetes

TL;DR: These results support the dynamic evaluation of renal resistive index as an early detector of renal vascular alterations in the presence of type 2 diabetes and hypertension, even before the onset of microalbuminuria.
Journal ArticleDOI

Measurement of pulse wave velocity in children and young adults: a comparative study using three different devices.

TL;DR: PWV measured by oscillometry (Vicorder (VIC) with the gold standard of applanation tonometry (PulsePen (PP), Sphygmocor (SC) and the most frequently used instruments in pediatrics is compared.

Arterial Stiffness: A Novel Risk Factor for Kidney Injury Progression?

TL;DR: In insights into the cross-talk between macrocirculation and renal microcirculation is provided and the currently available clinical evidence linking increased arterial stiffness with kidney disease progression is summarized.
Journal ArticleDOI

Non-invasive assessment of pulse wave velocity in mice by means of ultrasound images

TL;DR: An image process algorithm for assessing arterial PWV in mice using ultrasound images only is developed and supplies a non-invasive evaluation of anatomical and functional parameters of the mouse abdominal aorta and may offer a simple and useful system for evaluation of local vascular stiffness at other arterial site in the mouse.
Journal ArticleDOI

Cardiothoracic magnetic resonance flow imaging.

TL;DR: Current research efforts in the context of the larger clinical goals of 4D flow are discussed, including the use of unique hemodynamic markers to identify cardiovascular disease processes early in their course before clinical manifestation so that preemptive treatment can be undertaken.

Aortic stiffness is an independent predictor of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in hypertensive patients.

TL;DR: This study provides the first direct evidence that aortic stiffness is an independent predictor of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in patients with essential hypertension.
