Abstract
In recent years, great emphasis has been placed on the role of arterial stiffness in the development of cardiovascular diseases. Indeed, the assessment of arterial stiffness is increasingly used in the clinical assessment of patients. Although several papers have previously addressed the methodological issues concerning the various indices of arterial stiffness currently available, and their clinical applications, clinicians and researchers still report difficulties in selecting the most appropriate methodology for their specific use. This paper summarizes the proceedings of several meetings of the European Network for Non-invasive Investigation of Large Arteries and is aimed at providing an updated and practical overview of the most relevant methodological aspects and clinical applications in this area.

Effect of vitamin D supplementation on measures of arterial stiffness: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

TL;DR: A systematic review of the literature surrounding the use of vitamin D to ameliorate arterial stiffness found that low vitamin D has been associated with poor arterial compliance in observational studies.

Metabolic Syndrome and Vascular Alterations in Normotensive Subjects at Risk of Diabetes Mellitus

TL;DR: In normotensive subjects at risk of developing diabetes mellitus, the presence of MS is associated with a selective alteration of central PWV, and logistic regression analysis showed that MS was associated with increased risk of altered PVW.

Wave reflection leads to over- and underestimation of local wave speed by the PU- and QA-loop methods: theoretical basis and solution to the problem

TL;DR: It is concluded that neither the PU-loop nor the QA-loop method provides reliable estimates of local PWV in settings where wave reflections are present, and their application should therefore be discouraged, especially for the carotid artery.

The Effect of Sitagliptin Versus Glibenclamide on Arterial Stiffness, Blood Pressure, Lipids, and Inflammation in Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus Patients

TL;DR: Sitagliptin, but not glibenclamide, demonstrated a significant beneficial effect on BMI and triglyceride levels; however, arterial stiffness, blood pressure, oxidative stress, and inflammatory status were not significantly affected by adding sitagli leptin or glibanclamide to metformin-treated type 2 diabetes patients.

The EPICure study: association between hemodynamics and lung function at 11 years after extremely preterm birth.

TL;DR: The independent association between impaired lung function and cardiovascular physiology in early adolescence implies higher cardiovascular risk for children born EP, and suggests that prevention of chronic neonatal lung disease may be a priority in reducing later cardiovascular risk in preterm infants.

Aortic stiffness is an independent predictor of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in hypertensive patients.

TL;DR: This study provides the first direct evidence that aortic stiffness is an independent predictor of all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in patients with essential hypertension.
