The Nature of the Stimulation of Fungal Growth by Potato Extract
R. E. Beever,E. G. Bollard +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, growth of four fungi on a medium of potato tuber extract and glucose was considerably higher than on a defined medium of glucose, asparagine, mineral salts, biotin and thiamine.
Journal ArticleDOI
Southern African grasses with foliage that revives after dehydration
D. F. Gaff,R. P. Ellis +1 more
TL;DR: A brief survey in Southern Africa revealed 11 grass species and a number of sedges with foliage that recovers from air-drying and desiccation tolerance limits were extremely low being equivalent to approximately 0-5 % relative humidity.
Journal ArticleDOI
Chemical studies of essential oils of Juniperus oxycedrus ssp. badia.
Sofía Salido,Joaquín Altarejos,Manuel Nogueras,Adolfo Sánchez,Christophe Pannecouque,Myriam Witvrouw,Erik De Clercq +6 more
TL;DR: Two oil samples were examined, but found inactive, against the replication of HIV-1(III(B)) and HIV-2(ROD) in cell culture, whereas the samples were toxic for the cells at a 50% cytotoxic concentration of 106 and 123 microg/ml, respectively.
Journal ArticleDOI
Varietal differences in the ease of astringency removal by carbon dioxide gas and ethanol vapor treatments among Oriental astringent persimmons of Japanese and Chinese origin
Masahiko Yamada,Satoshi Taira,Masako Ohtsuki,Akihiko Sato,Hiroshi Iwanami,Hiroshi Yakushiji,Renzi Wang,Yong Yang,Gaochao Li +8 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors compared the effects of carbon dioxide (CO2) gas or ethanol (EtOH) vapor to remove the astringency of 13 and 12 astringent Oriental persimmon (Diospyros kaki thunb.) cultivars of Japanese and Chinese origin.
Journal ArticleDOI
Digestion of grass lipids and pigments in the sheep rumen.
Rex M. C. Dawson,Norma Hemington +1 more
TL;DR: It was concluded that rumen micro-organisms are mainly responsible for this degradation of grass lipids and pigments in the rumen of the sheep, although grass itself also contains enzymes which can degrade galactolipids.

Optical Rotatory Dispersion. Its Application to Protein Conformation.
E. F. Woods,Donnell +1 more
TL;DR: Optical rotation has been found to be one of the most convenient methods of following the denaturation of proteins and rotatory dispersion is capable of providing information on the folding of the polypeptide chain in proteins and the changes accompanying denaturation.
