Journal ArticleDOI

Tongue control for swallowing in Parkinson's disease: effects of age, rate, and stimulus consistency.

TL;DR: Patients with Parkinson's disease often suffer from swallowing problems, especially at more advanced stages of the disease, and efficient swallows require well‐coordinated tongue movements during bolus flow, but little is known about such movements in Parkinson's Disease.
Journal ArticleDOI

The effect of dopamine agonists on cognitive functions in non-demented early-mild Parkinson's disease patients.

TL;DR: It is hypothesize that combined stimulation of both dopamine receptor families, as occurs with rotigotine, cabergoline, L-dopa and pergolide, may preserve cognitive functions more than pure D2 family stimulation.
Journal ArticleDOI

Neuromuscular impairments are associated with impaired head and trunk stability during gait in Parkinson fallers

TL;DR: Evidence of neuromuscular deficits for PD fallers that are independent of medications, symptom severity, and posture are provided and contribute to impaired head, trunk, and pelvis control associated with falls in this population.
Journal ArticleDOI

Hypomania and mania related to dopamine replacement therapy in Parkinson's disease.

TL;DR: DRT-related hypomania and mania may exist as a distinct psychiatric symptom complex in young patients with early disease onset in Parkinson's disease and are relevant comorbidities in PD.

Movement Disorder Society-sponsored revision of the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS): scale presentation and clinimetric testing results.

Christopher G. Goetz, +87 more
- 15 Nov 2008 -
TL;DR: The combined clinimetric results of this study support the validity of the MDS‐UPDRS for rating PD.
Journal ArticleDOI

Colonic inflammation in Parkinson's disease.

TL;DR: Findings provide evidence that enteric inflammation occurs in Parkinson's disease and further reinforce the role of peripheral inflammation in the initiation and/or the progression of the disease.
Journal ArticleDOI

Effects of pedunculopontine nucleus area stimulation on gait disorders in Parkinson's disease

TL;DR: Although freezing of gait can be improved by low-frequency electrical stimulation of the pedunculopontine nucleus area in some patients with Parkinson's disease, the overall results are disappointing compared to the high levels of expectation raised by previous open label studies.
Journal ArticleDOI

The Clinically Important Difference on the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale

TL;DR: In this paper, a cross-sectional analysis of the CIDs for UPDRS total and motor scores was performed on patients with Parkinson disease (PD) using distribution-and anchor-based approaches based on the following external standards: disability (10% on the Schwab and England Activities of Daily Living Scale), disease stage (1 stage on the Hoehn and Yahr Scale), and quality of life (1 SD on the 12-Item Short Form Health Survey).
