28 Dec 1971TL;DR: In this article, a heavy aluminum coating ranging in thickness from 10 to 15 percent of the as-coated radius of a wire is provided on steel wire having a nominal diameter of from 008 to 025 inches by a combination of heating the wire to a temperature within a predetermined range, passing the wire at a predetermined speed related in a substantially inverse ratio to the temperature of the wire through a molten aluminum bath having a predetermined temperature and depth inversely related to each other.
Abstract: A heavy aluminum coating ranging in thickness from 10 to 15 per cent of the as-coated radius of a wire is provided on steel wire having a nominal diameter of from 008 to 025 inches by a combination of heating the wire to a temperature within a predetermined range, passing the wire at a predetermined speed related in a substantially inverse ratio to the temperature of the wire through a molten aluminum bath having a predetermined temperature and depth inversely related to each other The particular operating conditions of the process provide a coating of the desired thickness while operating on a plateau in a curve representing the relationship between the coating thickness and the various combined parameters of the process to provide a readily controllable process of making an easily reproducible, uniform heavy aluminum coating with a very thin interfacial alloy layer on long lengths of ferrous wire The coated wire is readily redrawable if necessary to attain a desired final gage and strength

TL;DR: In this article, new experimental data were presented on the manganese equilibrium in liquid steel under simple slags consisting of the oxides of iron and manganous with small amounts of impurities, leading to values of KMn which are significantly higher than those of Korber and Oelsen and in general somewhat above those of other investigators.

TL;DR: In this paper, a method for hot-rolling carbon and alloy steels in a continuous hot rolling mill including spraying water onto the surface of the steels at selected locations in the continuous hotrolling mill during hot-roll of steels was described.
Abstract: Method for hot-rolling carbon and alloy steels in a continuous hot-rolling mill including spraying water onto the surface of the steels at selected locations in the continuous hot-rolling mill during hot-rolling of the steels in order to control the temperature of the steels. The hot-rolled steels off-the-mill have an integrated mean temperature of not more than about 1750° F. and can have a surface temperature of about 1700° F. The as-rolled steel products produced by the method have uniform metallurgical characteristics. The scale which forms on the surface of the steels during air-cooling to ambient temperature is uniform, smooth, fine-textured and relatively thin.

17 Mar 1977TL;DR: In this article, a computerized electro-optical system gages two orthogonal dimensions of a moving hot bar at various peripheral positions using two back-light electronic camera heads mounted 90° apart on a scanner generated high-speed bar shadow pulses which represent the bar dimensions.
Abstract: Computerized electro-optical system gages two orthogonal dimensions of a moving hot bar at various peripheral positions Dual back-light electronic camera heads mounted 90° apart on a scanner generate high-speed bar shadow pulses which represent the bar dimensions Bar pulses are processed by way of individual camera electronics and a digital computer CRT and printing terminals, interacting with the computer, indicate and/or record each cold-size bar diameter measurement, a plot of bar profile deviation from aim gage overlaid on full- and half-commercial tolerance references with a data header, and a gaging system histogram Each camera head electronics includes camera AGC circuit, a digital type one-axis bidirectional linear sweep, bar pulse edge-detection with an autocorrelator to remove noise and enhance the bar pulse, and a digital accumulator of digital bar size signals and digital bar position-in-field-of-view signals The digital computer assimilates each bar size and bar position digital signal along with scanner position, bar temperature and other data signals The computer is programmed to: (a) compensate each bar size signal for field-of-view errors and other optical and electronic nonlinearities, bar temperature and other sources of error; (b) calibrate the gage off-line and automatically recalibrate the gage on-line to correct for drift and slope errors; (c) automatically drive the scanner and implement incremental digital storage of corrected bar size signals for bar profile plotting; (d) perform gaging system histograms; and (e) communicate with the CRT and printing terminals and an exterior control system

24 Sep 1976TL;DR: In this paper, a two-section grooved capstan arrangement for oil well pumping is described. And variations of the above basic arrangement are also described; the first section of the capstan from which the pumping cable extends has a basically constant diameter while the second section of rotatable capstan is formed from three contiguous interconnected portions.
Abstract: A longstroke pumping apparatus for oil well pumping is provided with turnaround capability and more efficient operation by the use of a two section grooved capstan arrangement from which a flexible pumping cable extends down the well and a flexible counterweight cable extends to a counterweight in a counterweight well. The first section of the capstan from which the pumping cable extends has a basically constant diameter while the second section of the rotatable capstan from which the counterweight cable extends is formed from three contiguous interconnected portions. The central portion has a substantially constant diameter and the two end portions have respectively an effectively increasing diameter and an effectively decreasing diameter. Variations of the above basic arrangement are also described.
