Abstract: Plants of chickpea were exposed to varied levels of cobalt (Co) and sampled at the 60-day stage. Cobalt at concentration <100 µM significantly increased the number of nodules, their dry mass, leghemoglobin concentration and the activity of nitrogenase. Similarly, the activities of glutamate dehydrogenase, glutamine synthetase and glutamate synthase also exhibited an increase in the presence of Co <100 µM, in nodules and leaves, respectively. The various photosynthetic attributes in leaves and the activity of antioxidative enzymes both in nodules and leaves were inhibited by Co in a concentration-dependent manner. However, the lipid peroxidation and the content of proline exhibited a significant increase in response to Co and were at a maximum in the plants exposed to 250 µM concentration of cobalt. Since most of the parameters showed a significant increase in response to 50 µM cobalt, this concentration may be regarded as a threshold concentration.

Abstract: There is good evidence from the medical literature that type I syndactyly, the most common form of the nonsyndromic syndactylies, is clinically heterogeneous. We therefore propose to group the condition into four subtypes, which are all autosomal dominantly inherited. Subtype 1, zygodactyly (cutaneous webbing of second and third toe without hand involvement) is the mildest and most common form. The phenotype varies from unilateral minor impression of webbing to bilateral complete webbing of second and third toe including a fusion of nails. Bony involvement is never observed. Subtype 2 is characterized by bilateral cutaneous and/or bony webbing of third and fourth finger, and second and third toe. The phenotype maps on chromosome 2q34-q36 and was designated as SD1 (ie syndactyly 1). The hallmark of subtype 3 is bilateral cutaneous or bony webbing of third and fourth finger, while subtype 4 shows bilateral cutaneous webbing of fourth and fifth toe. Both, subtype 3 and 4, are rare entities. Here, we present clinical and molecular data of a large Pakistani family with zygodactyly that was mapped to a new locus on chromosome 3p21.31 by genome-wide linkage analysis. The highest LOD score (Zmax=3.38) was obtained with microsatellite marker D3S2409. The disease interval is flanked by markers Chr3_4919 and Chr3_4940 encompassing about 0.20 Mb. Since the same phenotype appears not to be linked to this locus in a German family, we predict genetic heterogeneity in zygodactyly and propose to designate the 3p21.31 locus as ZD1 (i.e., zygodactyly 1).

Abstract: Sustained release floating capsules for theophylline were fabricated using drug:polymer ratio of 30:70. The hydrocolloids were used in different proportions and four formulations were prepared. These formulations were optimized on the basis of buoyancy, matrix integrity, duration of floating and in vitro drug release. All the four formulations showed good buoyancy and matrix integrity. The duration of floating was more than 12 h for all formulations. In vitro drug release study of these formulations indicated controlled release of theophylline and about 76 percent drug was released at the end of 12 h.

Abstract: This paper is designed to measure the use of Information Technology (IT) in the university libraries of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Chandigarh with an ulterior objective to establish some co-relation between quality in libraries and use of IT. The paper highlights the use of hardware and software facilities in university libraries. It also highlights the access of networks, information services and barriers in IT applications. A survey conducted on four university libraries, namely Panjab University library, Chandigarh; Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla; Punjabi university Library, Patiala; and Guru Nanak Dev University Library, Amritsar found that only Panjab University Library, Chandigarh and GND university library, Amritsar have provided computerised access to in-house databases.
