Explaining Differences in Mental Health Between Married and Cohabiting Individuals

Abstract: Research on the relationship between cohabitation and mental health tends to ignore social psychological factors that help explain mental health differences between the married and the unmarried, including coping resources and perceived relationship quality. In this paper I draw on social psychological theory and research to clarify differences in depression and alcohol use between married and cohabiting individuals. Using data from the National Survey of Families and Households, I examine the independent and combined influences of socioeconomic status, coping resources, and relationship quality to account for marital status differences in distress. I find that marital status differences in coping resources and relationship quality help explain the gap in depression, but not in alcohol use, between married and cohabiting individuals. Impact of Arizona’s SB 1070 Immigration Law on Utilization of Health Care and Public Assistance Among Mexican-Origin Adolescent Mothers and Their Mother Figures

Abstract: Objectives. We examined the impact of Arizona’s “Supporting Our Law Enforcement and Safe Neighborhoods Act” (SB 1070, enacted July 29, 2010) on the utilization of preventive health care and public assistance among Mexican-origin families.Methods. Data came from 142 adolescent mothers and 137 mother figures who participated in a quasi-experimental, ongoing longitudinal study of the health and development of Mexican-origin adolescent mothers and their infants (4 waves; March 2007–December 2011). We used general estimating equations to determine whether utilization of preventive health care and public assistance differed before versus after SB 1070’s enactment.Results. Adolescents reported declines in use of public assistance and were less likely to take their baby to the doctor; compared with older adolescents, younger adolescents were less likely to use preventive health care after SB 1070. Partonic Flow and Phi-Meson Production in Au+Au Collisions at Root S(Nn)=200 Gev

Abstract: We present first measurements of the phi-meson elliptic flow (v(2)(p(T))) and high-statistics p(T) distributions for different centralities from root s(NN) = 200 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC. In minimum bias collisions the v(2) of the phi meson is consistent with the trend observed for mesons. The ratio of the yields of the Omega to those of the phi as a function of transverse momentum is consistent with a model based on the recombination of thermal s quarks up to p(T)similar to 4 GeV/c, but disagrees at higher momenta. The nuclear modification factor (R-CP) of phi follows the trend observed in the K-S(0) mesons rather than in Lambda baryons, supporting baryon-meson scaling. These data are consistent with phi mesons in central Au+Au collisions being created via coalescence of thermalized s quarks and the formation of a hot and dense matter with partonic collectivity at RHIC.

Robust local community detection: on free rider effect and its elimination

Abstract: Given a large network, local community detection aims at finding the community that contains a set of query nodes and also maximizes (minimizes) a goodness metric. This problem has recently drawn intense research interest. Various goodness metrics have been proposed. However, most existing metrics tend to include irrelevant subgraphs in the detected local community. We refer to such irrelevant subgraphs as free riders. We systematically study the existing goodness metrics and provide theoretical explanations on why they may cause the free rider effect. We further develop a query biased node weighting scheme to reduce the free rider effect. In particular, each node is weighted by its proximity to the query node. We define a query biased density metric to integrate the edge and node weights. The query biased densest subgraph, which has the largest query biased density, will shift to the neighborhood of the query nodes after node weighting. We then formulate the query biased densest connected subgraph (QDC) problem, study its complexity, and provide efficient algorithms to solve it. We perform extensive experiments on a variety of real and synthetic networks to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed methods.
