Abstract: Measurements are reported of the proton and deuteron spin structure functions ${g}_{1}^{p}$ and ${g}_{1}^{d}$ at beam energies of 29.1, 16.2, and 9.7 GeV, and ${g}_{2}^{p}$ and ${g}_{2}^{d}$ at a beam energy of 29.1 GeV. The integrals ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}_{p}={\ensuremath{\int}}_{0}^{1}{g}_{1}^{p}{(x,Q}^{2})dx$ and ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}_{d}={\ensuremath{\int}}_{0}^{1}{g}_{1}^{d}{(x,Q}^{2})dx$ were evaluated at fixed ${Q}^{2}=3(\mathrm{GeV}{/c)}^{2}$ using the full data set to yield ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}_{p}=0.132\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.003(\mathrm{stat})\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.009(\mathrm{syst})$ and ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}_{d}=0.047\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.003\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.006.$ The ${Q}^{2}$ dependence of the ratio ${g}_{1}{/F}_{1}$ was studied and found to be small for ${Q}^{2}g1(\mathrm{GeV}{/c)}^{2}.$ Within experimental precision the ${g}_{2}$ data are well described by the twist-2 contribution, ${g}_{2}^{\mathrm{WW}}.$ Twist-3 matrix elements were extracted and compared to theoretical predictions. The asymmetry ${A}_{2}$ was measured and found to be significantly smaller than the positivity limit $\sqrt{R}$ for both proton and deuteron targets. ${A}_{2}^{p}$ is found to be positive and inconsistent with zero. Measurements of ${g}_{1}$ in the resonance region show strong variations with $x$ and ${Q}^{2},$ consistent with resonant amplitudes extracted from unpolarized data. These data allow us to study the ${Q}^{2}$ dependence of the integrals ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}_{p}$ and ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}_{n}$ below the scaling region.

Abstract: Referential models based on extant African apes have dominated reconstructions of early human evolution since Darwin’s time. These models visualize fundamental human behaviors as intensifications of behaviors observed in living chimpanzees and/or gorillas (for instance, upright feeding, male dominance displays, tool use, culture, hunting, and warfare). Ardipithecus essentially falsifies such models, because extant apes are highly derived relative to our last common ancestors. Moreover, uniquely derived hominid characters, especially those of locomotion and canine reduction, appear to have emerged shortly after the hominid/chimpanzee divergence. Hence, Ardipithecus provides a new window through which to view our clade’s earliest evolution and its ecological context. Early hominids and extant apes are remarkably divergent in many cardinal characters. We can no longer rely on homologies with African apes for accounts of our origins and must turn instead to general evolutionary theory. A proposed adaptive suite for the emergence of Ardipithecus from the last common ancestor that we shared with chimpanzees accounts for these principal ape/human differences, as well as the marked demographic success and cognitive efflorescence of later Plio-Pleistocene hominids.

Abstract: We present strange particle spectra and yields measured at midrapidity in √s=200 GeV proton-proton (p+p) collisions at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). We find that the previously observed universal transverse mass (m_T≡√pT2+m2) scaling of hadron production in p+p collisions seems to break down at higher mT and that there is a difference in the shape of the mT spectrum between baryons and mesons. We observe midrapidity antibaryon to baryon ratios near unity for Λ and Ξ baryons and no dependence of the ratio on transverse momentum, indicating that our data do not yet reach the quark-jet dominated region. We show the dependence of the mean transverse momentum ⟨pT⟩ on measured charged particle multiplicity and on particle mass and infer that these trends are consistent with gluon-jet dominated particle production. The data are compared with previous measurements made at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron and Intersecting Storage Rings and in Fermilab experiments and with leading-order and next-to-leading-order string fragmentation model predictions. We infer from these comparisons that the spectral shapes and particle yields from p+p collisions at RHIC energies have large contributions from gluon jets rather than from quark jets.

Abstract: Engineering high-energy interfacial structures for high-performance electrocatalysis is achieved by chemical coupling of active CoO nanoclusters and high-index facet Mn3O4 nano-octahedrons (hi-Mn3O4). A thorough characterization, including synchrotron-based near edge X-ray absorption fine structure, reveals that strong interactions between both components promote the formation of high-energy interfacial Mn-O-Co species and high oxidation state CoO, from which electrons are drawn by MnIII-O present in hi-Mn3O4. The CoO/hi-Mn3O4 demonstrates an excellent catalytic performance over the conventional metal oxide-based electrocatalysts, which is reflected by 1.2 times higher oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity than that of Ru/C and a comparable oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity to that of Pt/C as well as a better stability than that of Ru/C (95 % vs. 81 % retained OER activity) and Pt/C (92 % vs. 78 % retained ORR activity after 10 h running) in alkaline electrolyte.
