Abstract: Atomic-level structure engineering can substantially change the chemical and physical properties of materials. However, the effects of structure engineering on the capacitive properties of electrode materials at the atomic scale are poorly understood. Fast transport of ions and electrons to all active sites of electrode materials remains a grand challenge. Here, we report the radical modification of the pseudocapacitive properties of an oxide material, Zn x Co1-x O, via atomic-level structure engineering, which changes its dominant charge storage mechanism from surface redox reactions to ion intercalation into bulk material. Fast ion and electron transports are simultaneously achieved in this mixed oxide, increasing its capacity almost to the theoretical limit. The resultant Zn x Co1-x O exhibits high-rate performance with capacitance up to 450 F g-1 at a scan rate of 1 V s-1, competing with the state-of-the-art transition metal carbides. A symmetric device assembled with Zn x Co1-x O achieves an energy density of 67.3 watt-hour kg-1 at a power density of 1.67 kW kg-1, which is the highest value ever reported for symmetric pseudocapacitors. Our finding suggests that the rational design of electrode materials at the atomic scale opens a new opportunity for achieving high power/energy density electrode materials for advanced energy storage devices.

Abstract: A sample of 347 students, enrolled in principles of economics classes during the period 1997–2001, is used to examine the relation between class attendance and student performance on examinations. Among the questions examined are: Is attendance related to performance, with and without controls for other factors? Do only substantial levels of absence matter? Do low test scores cause more frequent subsequent absences? Do the results change when individual heterogeneity (in addition to controls for differences in SAT and GPA) is considered in the context of random‐effects and fixed‐effects models, using panel data? Can overall attendance be proxied by attendance at six meetings at the end of the semester, and does such a proxy yield the same relation to performance as overall attendance? We also study the factors that appear to contribute to improved classroom attendance.

Abstract: Sterol demethylation inhibitor (DMI) fungicides are widely used to control fungi pathogenic to humans and plants. Resistance to DMIs is mediated either through alterations in the structure of the target enzyme CYP51 (encoding 14α-demethylase), through increased expression of the CYP51 gene, or through increased expression of efflux pumps. We found that CYP51 expression in DMI-resistant (DMIR) isolates of the cherry leaf spot pathogen Blumeriella jaapii was increased 5- to 12-fold compared to that in DMI-sensitive (DMIS) isolates. Analysis of sequences upstream of CYP51 in 59 DMIR isolates revealed that various forms of a truncated non-long terminal direct repeat long interspersed nuclear element retrotransposon were present in all instances. Similar inserts upstream of CYP51 were not present in any of 22 DMIS isolates examined.
