Potentially avoidable hospitalizations for COPD and pneumonia: the role of physician and practice characteristics.

TL;DR: It is found that physicians who report limited access to ancillary services and high Medicaid case volume have patients who experience higher rates of admission for COPD and pneumonia, and additional resources and quality improvement interventions targeting these providers should be priorities.
Journal ArticleDOI

Prolonged breast-feeding and mortality up to two years post-partum among HIV-positive women in Zambia.

TL;DR: Although HIV-related mortality was high in this cohort of untreated HIV-positive women, prolonged lactation was not associated with increased mortality.
Journal ArticleDOI

A phase II trial of paclitaxel poliglumex in recurrent or persistent ovarian or primary peritoneal cancer (EOC): a Gynecologic Oncology Group Study.

TL;DR: PPX at 175 mg/m(2) every 21 days has a modest activity of limited duration when given as second or third line therapy in patients with epithelial ovarian or primary peritoneal cancer and the incidence of neuropathy using this dose in recurrent ovarian cancer is higher than predicted from studies in other tumors with PPX.
Journal ArticleDOI

A Multicenter Randomized Controlled Trial of a Liquid Loperamide Product Versus Placebo in the Treatment of Acute Diarrhea in Children

TL;DR: This controlled study provides data demonstrating that at recommend doses, loperamide is well tolerated and significantly shortens the duration and severity of symptoms of acute nonspecific diarrhea in children 2 through 11 years of age.
Journal ArticleDOI

Gamma-glutamyltransferase and risk of cardiovascular disease mortality in people with and without diabetes: pooling of three British Health Surveys.

TL;DR: Higher GGT levels are a risk factor for all-cause and cardiovascular disease death in people with and without diabetes, however, knowledge of GGT does not improve cardiovascular predictions beyond traditional risk factors.

Mineral Metabolism, Mortality, and Morbidity in Maintenance Hemodialysis

TL;DR: Hyperphosphatemia and hyperparathyroidism were significantly associated with all-cause, cardiovascular, and fracture-related hospitalization, and the population attributable risk percentage for disorders of mineral metabolism was 17.5%, owing largely to the high prevalence of hyperph phosphatemia.
Journal ArticleDOI

Overall Survival and Updated Results for Sunitinib Compared With Interferon Alfa in Patients With Metastatic Renal Cell Carcinoma

TL;DR: Sunitinib demonstrates longer overall survival compared with IFN-alpha plus improvement in response and progression-free survival in the first-line treatment of patients with metastatic RCC, highlighting an improved prognosis in patients with RCC in the era of targeted therapy.
Journal ArticleDOI

Survival and Prognostic Stratification of 670 Patients With Advanced Renal Cell Carcinoma

TL;DR: Five prognostic factors for predicting survival were identified and used to categorize patients with metastatic RCC into three risk groups, for which the median survival times were separated by 6 months or more.
