The global bandwidth shortage facing wireless carriers has motivated the exploration of the underutilized millimeter wave (mm-wave) frequency spectrum for future broadband cellular communication networks. There is, however, little knowledge about cellular mm-wave propagation in densely populated indoor and outdoor environments. Obtaining this information is vital for the design and operation of future fifth generation cellular networks that use the mm-wave spectrum. In this paper, we present the motivation for new mm-wave cellular systems, methodology, and hardware for measurements and offer a variety of measurement results that show 28 and 38 GHz frequencies can be used when employing steerable directional antennas at base stations and mobile devices.read more

Broadband Symmetrical E-Shaped Patch Antenna With Multimode Resonance for 5G Millimeter-Wave Applications
TL;DR: In this article, a symmetrical E-shaped patch antenna with multimode resonance is proposed for 5G broadband millimeter-wave (mmWave) applications, where a longitudinal slot is etched on the patch surface to change the original E-field distribution of the TM20 mode without affecting that of TM10 mode.

Single-User Versus Multi-User Precoding for Millimeter Wave MIMO Systems
TL;DR: This paper establishes the relevance of directional precode structures as a low-complexity and robust solution to meet the data rate demands of single-user MIMO systems relative to the more complex and less robust eigen-mode-based precoding structures, and proposes a simple class of directional schedulers that offers a low, complex and yet approximately fair separation plane in the user space.

Hybrid Spectrum Sharing in mmWave Cellular Networks
TL;DR: This paper introduces a new hybrid spectrum access scheme for mmWave networks, where data packets are scheduled through two mmWave carriers with different characteristics, and shows that this approach provides advantages with respect to traditional fully licensed or fully pooled spectrum access schemes.
