Targeting Free Radicals in Oxidative Stress-Related Human Diseases.

TLDR
Metal chelation, based on the application of selective metal chelators or metal delivery, may induce neuroprotective signaling and represents a promising therapeutic strategy in cancer and AD.

Experimental Evaluation of the Effectiveness of Resveratrol as an Antioxidant in Colon Cancer Prevention

TL;DR: Administrating resveratrol along with 1,2-dimethylhydrazine during 30 weeks led to the inhibition of oxidative stress manifestations, in particular, lipid peroxidation and morphological changes in the colon tissue of the animals that obtained resver atrol + DMH could be characterized as signs of mucous colitis.

Discovery of New Cyclopentaquinoline Analogues as Multifunctional Agents for the Treatment of Alzheimer's Disease.

TL;DR: 6-chloro-N-[2-(2,3-dihydro-1H-cyclopenta[b]quinolin-9-ylamino)-hexyl]]-nicotinamide hydrochloride (3e) is identified as the most promising compound with inhibitory potencies against EeAChE and EqBuChE in the low nanomolar level 67 and 153 nM, respectively.

Exposure to heavy metals causes histopathological changes and alters antioxidant enzymes in fresh water fish (Oreochromis niloticus)

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors described the deleterious effects of heavy metals at low levels in fresh water fish and showed that the exposure to different heavy metals even at low concentrations poses serious concern towards their potential danger to the survival and growth of fish and induces deletering effects in gills, brain and liver tissues.
Journal ArticleDOI

Dietary docosahexaenoic acid inhibits neurodegeneration and prevents stroke.

TL;DR: DHA, together with NPD1, may block neuronal damage and prevent stroke, and the inhibitory effect on neuronal damage is achieved through the antioxidant and anti‐inflammatory effects of DHA.
Journal ArticleDOI

Isopropyl Caffeate: A Caffeic Acid Derivative-Antioxidant Potential and Toxicity.

TL;DR: The results showed that isopropyl caffeate presents no significant theoretical risk of toxicity, with likely moderate bioactivity: GPCR binding, ion channel modulation, nuclear receptor binding, and enzyme inhibition, but moderate toxicity was demonstrated through depressant effects on the central nervous system.

Journal ArticleDOI

The Amyloid Hypothesis of Alzheimer's Disease: Progress and Problems on the Road to Therapeutics

TL;DR: It has been more than 10 years since it was first proposed that the neurodegeneration in Alzheimer's disease (AD) may be caused by deposition of amyloid β-peptide in plaques in brain tissue and the rest of the disease process is proposed to result from an imbalance between Aβ production and Aβ clearance.

Free radicals and antioxidants in normal physiological functions and human disease

TL;DR: Attention is focussed on the ROS/RNS-linked pathogenesis of cancer, cardiovascular disease, atherosclerosis, hypertension, ischemia/reperfusion injury, diabetes mellitus, neurodegenerative diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, and ageing.
Journal ArticleDOI

Targeting cancer cells by ROS-mediated mechanisms: a radical therapeutic approach?

TL;DR: It is argued that modulating the unique redox regulatory mechanisms of cancer cells might be an effective strategy to eliminate these cells.

The effect of vitamin E and beta carotene on the incidence of lung cancer and other cancers in male smokers

TL;DR: No reduction in the incidence of lung cancer among male smokers is found after five to eight years of dietary supplementation with alpha-tocopherol or beta carotene, and this trial raises the possibility that these supplements may actually have harmful as well as beneficial effects.
