Effect of Normobaric Hypoxia on Alterations in Redox Homeostasis, Nitrosative Stress, Inflammation, and Lysosomal Function following Acute Physical Exercise

TL;DR: It is indicated that even a single intensive exercise session disrupts the antioxidant barrier and leads to increased oxidative and nitrosative damage at the systemic level, while hypoxia significantly exacerbates oxidative stress, inflammation, and lysosomal dysfunction in athletic subjects.
Journal ArticleDOI

Developmental alterations, teratogenic effects, and oxidative disruption induced by ibuprofen, aluminum, and their binary mixture on Danio rerio.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors evaluated the developmental defects, teratogenic alterations, and oxidative stress induced by individual forms and the mixture of ibuprofen (IBU) and aluminum (Al) on zebrafish embryos.

Improving effect of Actinidia arguta leaf on hyperglycemia-induced cognitive dysfunction

TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of ethyl acetate fraction from Actinidia arguta leaf (EFAL) in improving cognitive decline caused by hyperglycemia-induced oxidative stress was investigated.
Journal ArticleDOI

Evaluation of the Antioxidant and Anti-Inflammatory Potential of Fermented Achyranthes japonica Nakai Extract

TL;DR: Fermentation of the fermented extract of AJ increased the total phenolic and flavonoid contents of AJ and showed significantly higher free radical scavenging activities as compared with NFAJ, suggesting that FAJ has therapeutic potential as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent.

TL;DR: 1. Oxygen is a toxic gas - an introduction to oxygen toxicity and reactive species, and the chemistry of free radicals and related 'reactive species'
Journal ArticleDOI

The Amyloid Hypothesis of Alzheimer's Disease: Progress and Problems on the Road to Therapeutics

TL;DR: It has been more than 10 years since it was first proposed that the neurodegeneration in Alzheimer's disease (AD) may be caused by deposition of amyloid β-peptide in plaques in brain tissue and the rest of the disease process is proposed to result from an imbalance between Aβ production and Aβ clearance.

Free radicals and antioxidants in normal physiological functions and human disease

TL;DR: Attention is focussed on the ROS/RNS-linked pathogenesis of cancer, cardiovascular disease, atherosclerosis, hypertension, ischemia/reperfusion injury, diabetes mellitus, neurodegenerative diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, and ageing.
Journal ArticleDOI

Targeting cancer cells by ROS-mediated mechanisms: a radical therapeutic approach?

TL;DR: It is argued that modulating the unique redox regulatory mechanisms of cancer cells might be an effective strategy to eliminate these cells.

The effect of vitamin E and beta carotene on the incidence of lung cancer and other cancers in male smokers

TL;DR: No reduction in the incidence of lung cancer among male smokers is found after five to eight years of dietary supplementation with alpha-tocopherol or beta carotene, and this trial raises the possibility that these supplements may actually have harmful as well as beneficial effects.
