TL;DR: The magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectra of Zn1−xTMxO (TM=Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, and Cu) films were measured to clarify their magneto-optical properties as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectra of Zn1−xTMxO (TM=Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni, and Cu) films were measured to clarify their magneto-optical properties. Noticeable magneto-optical effect was not observed for Zn1−xScxO, Zn1−xTixO, Zn1−xVxO, and Zn1−xCrxO. On the contrary, Zn1−xMnxO, Zn1−xCoxO, Zn1−xNixO, and Zn1−xCuxO showed pronounced negative MCD peaks near 3.4 eV which correspond to the band gap of the host ZnO semiconductor. These results show that ZnO alloyed with Mn, Co, Ni, and Cu is a diluted magnetic semiconductor with strong exchange interaction between sp-band carriers and localized d electrons.

TL;DR: Tap water collected in China, Japan, India, the United States, and Canada between 2006 and 2008 contained the greatest concentrations of total PFCs, while those from Toyama (Japan) contained only 0.62 ng/L.
Abstract: The recent development of a sensitive and accurate analytical method for the analysis of 20 perfluorinated compounds (PFCs), including several short-chain PFCs, has enabled their quantification in tap water collected in China, Japan, India, the United States, and Canada between 2006 and 2008. Of the PFCs measured, PFOS, PFHxS, PFBS, PFPrS, PFEtS, PFOSA, N-EtFOSAA, PFDoDA, PFUnDA, PFDA, PFNA, PFHpA, PFHxA, PFPeA, PFBA, and PFPrA were found at detectable concentrations in the tap water samples. The water samples from Shanghai (China) contained the greatest concentrations of total PFCs (arithmetic mean = 130 ng/L), whereas those from Toyama (Japan) contained only 0.62 ng/L. In addition to PFOS and PFOA, short-chain PFCs such as PFHxS, PFBS, PFHxA, and PFBA were found to be prevalent in drinking water. According to the health-based values (HBVs) and advisory guidelines derived for PFOS, PFOA, PFBA, PFHxS, PFBS, PFHxA, and PFPeA by the U.S.EPA and the Minnesota Department of Health, tap water may not pose an immediate health risk to consumers.

TL;DR: Atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscope imaging reveals the atomic structure of the intrinsic point defects and grain boundaries in monolayer NbSe2, and confirms the low defect concentration in the authors' high-quality film, which is the key to two-dimensional superconductivity.
Abstract: The discovery of monolayer superconductors bears consequences for both fundamental physics and device applications. Currently, the growth of superconducting monolayers can only occur under ultrahigh vacuum and on specific lattice-matched or dangling bond-free substrates, to minimize environment- and substrate-induced disorders/defects. Such severe growth requirements limit the exploration of novel two-dimensional superconductivity and related nanodevices. Here we demonstrate the experimental realization of superconductivity in a chemical vapour deposition grown monolayer material—NbSe2. Atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscope imaging reveals the atomic structure of the intrinsic point defects and grain boundaries in monolayer NbSe2, and confirms the low defect concentration in our high-quality film, which is the key to two-dimensional superconductivity. By using monolayer chemical vapour deposited graphene as a protective capping layer, thickness-dependent superconducting properties are observed in as-grown NbSe2 with a transition temperature increasing from 1.0 K in monolayer to 4.56 K in 10-layer. Two-dimensional superconductors will likely have applications not only in devices, but also in the study of fundamental physics. Here, Wang et al. demonstrate the CVD growth of superconducting NbSe2 on a variety of substrates, making these novel materials increasingly accessible.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors constructed a time series of data on annual water discharges and sediment fluxes from these large rivers to the western Pacific Ocean covering the period 1950-2008 and found that the short-term variation of sediment flux is dominated by natural climatic oscillations such as the El Nino/La Nina cycle and that anthropogenic causes involving dams and land use control the long-term (decadal scale) decrease in sediment flux to the ocean.

TL;DR: In this paper, a new strategy for the simultaneous tuning of catalytic activity and water solubility of complex catalysts is described on the basis of an acid−base equilibrium between pyridinol and pyrinolate as the catalyst ligands.
