A review on selective laser sintering/melting (SLS/SLM) of aluminium alloy powders: Processing, microstructure, and properties

TL;DR: In this article, the state of the art in selective laser sintering/melting (SLS/SLM) processing of aluminium powders is reviewed from different perspectives, including powder metallurgy (P/M), pulsed electric current (PECS), and laser welding of aluminium alloys.
Journal ArticleDOI

Dislocation network in additive manufactured steel breaks strength–ductility trade-off

TL;DR: In this article, the authors show that the pre-existing dislocation network, which maintains its configuration during the entire plastic deformation, is an ideal modulator that is able to slow down but not entirely block the dislocation motion.
Journal ArticleDOI

Critical review of automotive steels spot welding: process, structure and properties

TL;DR: In this article, the fundamental understanding of structure-properties relationship in automotive steels resistance spot welds is discussed. And a brief review of friction stir spot welding, as an alternative to RSW, is also included.
Journal ArticleDOI

Revisiting fundamental welding concepts to improve additive manufacturing: From theory to practice

TL;DR: In this article, a unified equation to compute the energy density is proposed to compare works performed with distinct equipment and experimental conditions, covering the major process parameters: power, travel speed, heat source dimension, hatch distance, deposited layer thickness and material grain size.
Journal ArticleDOI

Using deep neural network with small dataset to predict material defects

TL;DR: This study attempted to predict solidification defects by DNN regression with a small dataset that contains 487 data points and found that a pre-trained and fine-tuned DNN shows better generalization performance over shallow neural network, support vector machine, and DNN trained by conventional methods.

Four Types of LME Cracks in RSW of Zn-Coated AHSS

TL;DR: In this paper, the LME cracks were classified into four categories, namely type A, type B, type C, and type D, based on the formation location, and the effect of exposure to liquid zinc and tensile stress on LME cracking revealed the time dependency of LME in RSW.
Journal ArticleDOI

Forming mechanism and mechanical property of pulsed laser welded Ti alloy and stainless steel joint using copper as interlayer

TL;DR: In this paper, an unmelted Cu interlayer was used as an interlayer to prevent the formation of brittle Ti-Fe intermetallics when joining Ti alloy to stainless steel (SS).
Journal ArticleDOI

Finite Element Simulation of Carbide Precipitation in Austenitic Stainless Steel 304

TL;DR: In this paper, a three dimensional transient finite element model with Gaussian heat source was proposed to predict the heat transfer in Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW) of stainless steel 304 and experimental tests were conducted to study chromiu m carbide precipitation and to verify the developed model.
Journal ArticleDOI

Visualisation and optimisation of shielding gas coverage during gas metal arc welding

TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of shielding gas flow rate, as well as changes in the nozzle stand-off and angle, on the weld quality was investigated using schlieren imaging, which was used to validate 2D and 3D magnetohydrodynamic finite element models of the interaction between the shielding gas, the arc and the ambient atmosphere.
Journal ArticleDOI

Influence of Residual Stresses on Fatigue Response of Welded Tubular K-Joints

TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of residual stresses on the fatigue response of welded tubular K-joints was investigated through neutron-diffraction, hole-drilling and X-ray methods.
