Abstract: Target cascading is a key challenge in the early product development stages of large complex artifacts: how to propagate the desirable top level design specifications (or targets) to appropriate specifications for the various subsystems and components in a consistent and efficient manner. Consistency means that all parts of the designed system should work well together, while efficiency means that the process itself should avoid iterations at later stages, which are costly in time and resources. In the present article target cascading is formalized by a process modeled as a multilevel optimal design problem. Design targets are cascaded down to lower levels using partitioning of the original problem into a hierarchical set of subproblems. For each design problem at a given level, an optimisation problem is formulated to minimize deviations from the propagated targets and thus achieve intersystem compatibility. A coordination strategy links all subproblem decisions so that the overall system performance targets are met. The process is illustrated with an explicit analytical problem and a simple automotive chassis design model that demonstrates how the process can be applied in practice.

Abstract: A search engine system displays the results of a multiple-category search according to levels of relevance of the categories to a user's search query. A query server receives a search query from a user and identifies, within each of multiple item categories, a set of items that satisfy the query. The sets of items are used to generate, for each of the multiple categories, a score that reflects a level significance or relevance of the category to the search. The scores may be based, for example, on the number of hits within each category relative to the total number of items in that category, the popularity levels of items that satisfy the query, a personal profile of the user, or a combination thereof. The categories are then presented to the user, together with the most relevant items within each category, in the order of highest to lowest category relevance.

Abstract: Objective.—The periaqueductal gray matter (PAG) is at the center of a powerful descending antinociceptive neuronal network. We studied iron homeostasis in the PAG as an indicator of function in patients with episodic migraine (EM) between attacks and patients with chronic daily headache (CDH) during headache. High-resolution magnetic resonance techniques were used to map the transverse relaxation rates R2, R2*, and R2′ in the PAG, red nucleus (RN), and substantia nigra (SN). R2′ is a measure of non-heme iron in tissues. Methods.—Seventeen patients diagnosed with EM with and without aura, 17 patients diagnosed with CDH and medication overuse, and 17 normal adults (N) were imaged with a 3.0-tesla magnetic resonance imaging system. For each subject, mean values of the relaxation rates, R2 (1/T2), R2* (1/T2*), and R2′ (R2* − R2) were obtained for the PAG, RN, and SN. R2, R2*, and R2′ values of the EM, CDH, and N groups were compared using analysis of variance, Student t test, and correlation analysis. Results.—In the PAG, there was a significant increase in mean R2′ and R2* values in both the EM and CDH groups (P<.05) compared with the N group, but no significant difference in these values was demonstrated between the EM and CDH groups, or between those with migraine with or without aura in the EM group. Positive correlations were found for duration of illness with R2′ in the EM and CDH groups. A decrease in mean R2′ and R2* values also was observed in the RN and SN of the CDH group compared with the N and EM groups (P<.05), explained best by flow activation due to head pain. Conclusions.—Iron homeostasis in the PAG was selectively, persistently, and progressively impaired in the EM and CDH groups, possibly caused by repeated migraine attacks. These results support and emphasize the role of the PAG as a possible “generator” of migraine attacks, potentially by dysfunctional control of the trigeminovascular nociceptive system.

Abstract: A power-split hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) combines the advantages of both series and parallel hybrid vehicle architectures by utilizing a planetary gear set to split and combine the power produced by electric machines and a combustion engine. Because of the different modes of operation, devising a near optimal energy management strategy is quite challenging and essential for these vehicles. To improve the fuel economy of a power-split HEV, we first formulate the energy management problem as a nonlinear and constrained optimal control problem. Then two different cost functions are defined and model predictive control (MPC) strategies are utilized to obtain the power split between the combustion engine and electrical machines and the system operating points at each sample time. Simulation results on a closed-loop high-fidelity model of a power-split HEV over multiple standard drive cycles and with different controllers are presented. The results of a nonlinear MPC strategy show a noticeable improvement in fuel economy with respect to those of an available controller in the commercial Powertrain System Analysis Toolkit (PSAT) software and the other proposed methodology by the authors based on a linear time-varying MPC.
