Abstract: The compressive flow behavior of Al, Al−7 pct Mg and 7075 Al alloy foams has been determined in structures whose void fraction varies from 0.80 to 0.95 of the total volume. In all cases, a greater than linear increase in flow strength with increase in density was exhibited, indicating that bending stresses within the foam structure are an important feature of the collapse mode. The flow strength did not follow proportionately changes in bulk flow strength in comparisons of either alloy or of heat-treatment conditions. Ancillary tensile and metallographic observations show that this lack of correlation arises because the different foams collapse by different modes with localized fracture becoming dominant in the higher strength 7075 alloy. The energy absorbing efficiency was found to be independent of foam density for all the materials. However, the efficiency was found to be a strong function of the alloy and heat treatment increasing from about 30 pct in Al, to 43 pct in Al−7 pct Mg and to 50 pct in the solution heat treated and aged 7075 alloy. The increase in efficiency occurs because of an increase in the propensity to fracture in the higher strength alloys which introduces the potential for a propagating constant-stress collapse process.

Abstract: Central nervous system (CNS) dysfunction in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is highly variable, although it is often described under a single heading of "neuropsychiatric" or "CNS" SLE. To clarify these CNS abnormalities, we studied 91 lupus patients, 63 of whom had CNS symptoms or signs, over 599 patient years. By placing patients in relatively homogeneous clinical groups (stroke, seizure, suicide attempt, hallucination, confusion, decreased alertness) we detected significant (but variable among groups) correlations with other manifestations of SLE, suggesting separate mechanisms for each CNS disorder. These correlations were lost if all "CNS-SLE" was considered as a single group. Patients with decreased alertness often had undetected systemic infections and had a high death rate from infection, rather than from CNS-SLE. The understanding of the pathogenesis and potential treatment of CNS disorders in lupus will depend on classifying the patients into homogeneous groups.

Abstract: Surface plasmons can be excited on a metal by an external plane-wave beam through the use of prism or grating couplers or by introducing roughness. This can enhance the electric field at the surface compared with that in the incident beam, and it has been suggested that this effect is an important aspect of surface-enhanced Raman scattering. A general upper limit for this field enhancement is derived on the basis of energy conservation. Numerical results are given for Ag, Au, and Cu. With a perfect coupler on a Ag surface, the maximum increase of the square of the electric field in the 2–3-eV range is ≅300. On randomly roughened surfaces, the estimated enhancements are of the order of unity.
