12 Jun 1992TL;DR: In this article, an airborne radar system which scans the flight path of an aircraft with two radar scans, an upper elevation scan pointing above local level and a lower elevation scan pointed below the glide slope, is presented.
Abstract: The present invention is an airborne radar system which scans the flight path of an aircraft with two radar scans, an upper elevation scan pointing above local level and a lower elevation scan pointing below the glide slope. The radar returns from the upper elevation scan are used to detect the core of the microburst. The core and a model of the windshear which uses the core are used to select angles and range cell candidates, in a lower elevation scan, for hazard detection processing. The candidates in the lower scan, which is pointing at the ground, are used to create a hazard map tested against a predetermined hazard threshold. A threshold violation results in a pilot alert. The hazard map includes a vertical factor determined through model coefficients in the radial outflow as a function of altitude. The invention applies the model to determine the total hazard factor along the glideslope using the vertical hazard of the model and altitude scaling of the horizontal hazard from the lower bar elevation to the glideslope of the aircraft. A colored hazard map can be displayed to the pilot allowing the pilot to select an abort direction based on the area of the highest hazard. The present invention also includes a radar scan with two pulse repetition frequencies which allows the elimination of non-correlated returns. The system also includes post detection integration with a sliding azimuth window to enhance the signal to noise ratio. The system also combines velocities within a single range gate to produce a velocity representing the windspeed at that range. To further enhance the determination of the windburst hazard an oriented and specially shaped window is used in an ordered constant false alarm rate process to remove ground clutter from the lower scan.

28 Sep 1989TL;DR: In this article, a display, a display method and an apparatus are disclosed which produce a summary display depicting function states using discrete state bars centered in one window of a two-window display.
Abstract: A display, a display method and an apparatus are disclosed which produce a summary display depicting function states using discrete state bars centered in one window of a two-window display. The other window on the summary display includes meters for the parameters along the active path of the status tree for the most relevant function as determined by the operator. Each meter indicates not only the current value of the parameter being monitored but the ranges of the different function states as they correspond to the parameter being displayed by the meter. Each meter also carries a data quality indicator. A second level display is provided which depicts the status tree with the active path highlighted allowing the operator to review the decision made by the status tree. The second level display also indicates the values of the parameters used in the decision-making process and includes a miniature version of the summary display that allows the operator to continuously monitor system summary status while reviewing the second level display. A third level display is also provided which depicts detailed information on the sensor values of the parameters being monitored as well as the exact questions being answered by decision trees of the process control monitoring system along with the answers. This third level display also includes a miniature version of the summary status display.

TL;DR: In this article, a simple two-dimensional model for gated turn-off of a p-n-p-n device is used to derive an expression relating the storage time and the turnoff gain.
Abstract: A simple two-dimensional model for gated turn-off of a p-n-p-n device is used to derive an expression relating the storage time and the turn-off gain. The observed dependence of storage time on turn-off gain fits the derived expression well for devices specially fabricated consistant with the assumptions of the model. The fall time is discussed qualitatively.

01 Oct 1981TL;DR: In this article, two proposed safety parameter display systems, of the type to be required in nuclear power plant control rooms, were evaluated using a training simulator and experienced crews undergoing refresher training.
Abstract: Two proposed safety parameter display systems, of the type to be required in nuclear power plant control rooms, were evaluated using a training simulator and experienced crews undergoing refresher training. A decision analysis approach was used. The discussion addresses the effectiveness of the training situation as an evaluation tool and methodological issues.
