TL;DR: The effects of ultraviolet radiation on microorganisms have been studied frequently andConflicting theories have been advanced to explain the nature of the bactericidal action of ultraviolet Radiation.
Abstract: The effects of ultraviolet radiation on microorganisms have been studied frequently. The lethal action of sunlight on certain bacteria was demonstrated by Downes and Blunt as early as 1877. Roux (1887) showed that spores as well as bacteria are destroyed by these radiations and in 1903 Barnard and Morgan reported that the bactericidal action of radiant energy is limited to wavelengths shorter than 3000k. The susceptibility of microorganisms to ultraviolet radiation under varying conditions has also received considerable attention. Wells and Wells (1936), Whiser (1940), and Koller (1939) claim that air-borne bacteria are ten times as resistant to radiation at high relative humidity as when floating in air at low humidity. Koller's results indicate that floating bacteria are less resistant to ultraviolet than similar bacteria on the agar surface of a Petri plate and Wells (1940) states that air-borne bacteria are about twenty times less resistant than those floating in a liquid suspension. Rentschler and Nagy (1940) report the same sensitivity for air borne and for identical bacteria on the surface of agar and no effect due to humidity. The Bunsen-Roscoe reciprocity law for the bactericidal action of ultraviolet has been tested by Coblentz and Fulton (1924), by Gates (1929) and by Koller (1939) with varying results. Conflicting theories have been advanced to explain the nature of the bactericidal action of ultraviolet radiation. In recent years a rapid and simple method for measuring ultraviolet radiation has been made available by one of us (Rent-

TL;DR: In this paper, a transition duct for routing a gas flow from a combustor to the first rotating blade of a turbine section in a combustion turbine engine has an internal passage from an inlet (204) to an outlet (210) that is offset from the inlet in the longitudinal, radial and tangential directions.
Abstract: A transition duct (200) for routing a gas flow from a combustor (220) to the first rotating blade of a turbine section in a combustion turbine engine has an internal passage from an inlet (204) to an outlet (210) that is offset from the inlet (204) in the longitudinal, radial and tangential directions. The offset outlet (210) and the curved internal passage discharge the gas flow toward the first stage blade array at an angle (216) in the tangential direction relative to the longitudinal direction. This angled discharge can be presented directly to the blades, thus avoiding the need for first stage vanes and the associated costs and complexity.

TL;DR: In this article, an integrated array of solar cells, each cell having a positive and a negative electrode, is disclosed, and a first grid comprising a plurality of non-intersecting electrically conductive members is affixed to an insulating substrate.
Abstract: An integrated array of solar cells, each cell having a positive and a negative electrode, is disclosed. A first grid comprising a plurality of non-intersecting electrically conductive members is affixed to an insulating substrate. Each single individual member of this grid forms the negative electrode of an individual cell of the array. Overlying and affixed to the negative electrodes and the surface of the substrate between these electrodes is a semiconductor layer of a first conductivity type. Isolated (i.e., non-touching or non-abutting) semiconductor regions of a second conductivity type form a plurality of PN junctions with the semiconductor layer. These P-N junctions are the active areas of the individual cells of the array. Each of the isolated semiconductor regions of the second conductivity type is solely coupled to an individual member of another grid whose members form the positive electrodes of the individual cells. Electrical interconnection is made through a non-active region of the semiconductor layer to couple the cells comprising the array in series circuit relationship.

TL;DR: A powerline carrier communications system includes a plurality of types of load management terminals, each of which has a unique address, and a combination field configuration and test terminal which can be plugged into the load management terminal as discussed by the authors.
Abstract: A powerline carrier communications system includes a plurality of types of load management terminals, each of which has a unique address, and a combination field configuration and test terminal which can be plugged into the load management terminals. The combination terminal is coupled to the powerline through the connection to the load management terminal and generates a separate set of test commands for each type of load management terminal, which are transmitted over the powerline for execution by the connected load management terminal. Some types of load management terminals include an INITIALIZATION ENABLE line which, when activated by the connected combination terminal, commands the load management terminal to accept and store an address value received over the powerline as its new unique address.

TL;DR: In this article, the primary gas fuel spray bars are aerodynamically shaped and a row of fuel discharge ports are formed on opposing sides of the spray bar sides to create turbulence in the air flow that ensures adequate mixing of fuel and air.
Abstract: A combustor for a gas turbine having primary and secondary combustion zones. The combustor has primary gas fuel spray pegs for supplying a lean mixture of gaseous fuel to the primary combustion zone via a first annular pre-mixing passage and secondary fuel spray bars for supplying a lean mixture of fuel to the secondary combustion zone via a second annular pre-mixing passage. The fuel spray bars are aerodynamically shaped and a row of fuel discharge ports are formed on opposing sides of the spray bar. A pair of mixing fins project outwardly from the spray bar sides. The fins create turbulence in the air flow that ensures adequate mixing of the fuel and air. The fins have sufficient height and are displaced sufficiently far from the fuel discharge ports so that although the turbulence has not dissipated by the time the air flow reaches the fuel discharge ports, the zone of recirculation located downstream from the fins does not extend to the fuel discharge ports. This ensures that the spray bars will not act as flame holders and cause combustion to occur prematurely within the pre-mixing passage.
