TL;DR: In this paper, tensile and compressive stress-strain curves were obtained for several types of microstructures in a variety of steels, including Widmanstatten ferrite-pearlite and ultrafine-grained martensite.
Abstract: Tensile and compressive stress-strain curves were obtained for several types of microstructures in a variety of steels. The strength-differential effect, previously found in martensitic structures, was present in lower, intermediate, and upper bainite and in Widmanstatten ferritepearlite as well as in ultrafine-grained martensite. An equiaxed ferrite-pear lite structure showed no strength differential. The strength differential in martensite increased as test temperature was decreased below room temperature. In several series of tests, the same specimen design was used in tension and in compression to eliminate possible strength variations due to variations in specimen preparation. Several theories which have been proposed for the strength-differential effect are discussed with respect to the present results, and it is shown that most of the previous suggestions are invalid.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors propose a top-down approach for product platform design, which is a set of common components, modules or parts from which a stream of derivative products can be created.
Abstract: A product platform is a set of common components, modules or parts from which a stream of derivative products can be created. Product platform design is typically performed as redesign and consolidation of existing products to create more competitive product families by reducing part variety and standardizing components. The main disadvantage of such an approach is that the benefits of product platform design are achieved only after a number of parts have been designed and manufactured, with all the associated expenditure. A number of approaches, referred to as “top-down approaches”, have been proposed recently to design the platforms since the original design of the product families. However, current top-own approaches have two major limitations: (1) they do not enable multiple levels of commonality for different components and features, and (2) they have been applied to products that are variegated in one specification, whereas products are typically variegated in multiple specifications. This paper des...

TL;DR: An annular premix section that reduces NO x and CO emissions of a gas turbine combustor by providing a more homogeneous fuel/air mixture for main stage combustion is provided in this article.
Abstract: An annular premix section that reduces NO x and CO emissions of a gas turbine combustor by providing a more homogeneous fuel/air mixture for main stage combustion is provided. A gas turbine combustor according to the present invention includes a nozzle housing, a main fuel nozzle, and a main fuel swirler. A main combustion zone is located adjacent to the nozzle housing. The main fuel nozzle extends through the nozzle housing and is attached to a nozzle housing base. The tip of the main fuel nozzle is located downstream of the nozzle housing base. The main fuel swirler surrounds a portion of the main fuel nozzle, with a downstream end of the main fuel swirler located downstream of a main fuel injection port and upstream of the main fuel nozzle tip. The main fuel swirler is adapted to receive a flow of compressed air and to mix a fuel with the flow of compressed air to form a fuel/air mixture flow. An annular premix section, adjacent to the downstream end of the main fuel swirler, is adapted to receive and expand the fuel/air mixture flow. A contraction zone is located downstream of the premix section and upstream of the main combustion zone. The contraction zone is adapted to increase the velocity of the fuel/air mixture flow into the main combustion zone.

TL;DR: In this paper, a transceiver is provided with both voltage and current coupling to a three phase transmission line system, where each phase conductor is coupled to a common point which is connected in signal communication with an input to a receiver.
Abstract: A transceiver is provided with both voltage and current coupling to a three phase transmission line system. Each phase conductor is coupled to a common point which is connected in signal communication with an input to a receiver. Another input of the receiver is coupled to the neutral conductor of the power line system by an H-field coupler. A signal coupling unit is associated with the voltage couplers between the common connection point and the first receiver input. The receiver is provided with the capability of comparing the voltage signal with the current signal and selecting the stronger of the two. Therefore, the transceiver of the present invention is less adversely affected by standing wave problems since the voltage and current signals are out of phase and voltage nodes are associated with current antinodes and vice versa. Therefore, regardless of the location along the standing wave that the transceiver is located, the best signal available will be used for demodulation purposes.

TL;DR: In this paper, a design for lateral field film bulk acoustic resonators (LF-FBAR) is presented, where all electrodes are located on one surface of the piezoelectric material, thereby simplifying manufacturing and improving performance.
Abstract: This invention is a design for lateral field film bulk acoustic resonators (LF-FBAR). All electrodes in this design are located on one surface of the piezoelectric material, thereby simplifying manufacturing and improving performance. The gap between electrodes is limited to a specified dimension to maximize the efficiency of the device. Single and multi-pole devices are described. Barium magnesium fluoride and lithium niobate are specified as the piezoelectric material for high frequency applications.
