Oncomirs : microRNAs with a role in cancer
TLDR
I MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are an abundant class of small non-protein-coding RNAs that function as negative gene regulators as discussed by the authors, and have been shown to repress the expression of important cancer-related genes and might prove useful in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.Abstract:
I MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are an abundant class of small non-protein-coding RNAs that function as negative gene regulators. They regulate diverse biological processes, and bioinformatic data indicates that each miRNA can control hundreds of gene targets, underscoring the potential influence of miRNAs on almost every genetic pathway. Recent evidence has shown that miRNA mutations or mis-expression correlate with various human cancers and indicates that miRNAs can function as tumour suppressors and oncogenes. miRNAs have been shown to repress the expression of important cancer-related genes and might prove useful in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.read more

MicroRNA-375 inhibits tumour growth and metastasis in oesophageal squamous cell carcinoma through repressing insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor
Kar Lok Kong,Dora L.W. Kwong,Tim Hon Man Chan,Simon Law,Leilei Chen,Yan Li,Yan Ru Qin,Xin Yuan Guan +7 more
TL;DR: It is demonstrated that miR-375 has a strong tumour-suppressive effect through inhibiting the expression of IGF1R and could inhibit clonogenicity, cell motility, cell proliferation, tumour formation and metastasis in mice.

MicroRNA expression profiling to identify and validate reference genes for relative quantification in colorectal cancer.
TL;DR: This study demonstrates that the top six most stably expressed miRNAs described herein should be validated as suitable reference genes in both high-throughput and lower throughput RT-qPCR colorectal miRNA studies.

Development of the human cancer microRNA network
TL;DR: A cancer-miRNA network is developed by mining the literature of experimentally verified cancer- miRNA relationships and it is found that in 67% of the cancer types have at least two neighboring miRNAs showing downregulation which is statistically significant (P < 10-7, Randomization test).

Genetic variations in microRNA-related genes are novel susceptibility loci for esophageal cancer risk.
TL;DR: The present study provides the first evidence that miRNAs may affect esophageal cancer risk in general and that specific genetic variants in miRNA-related genes may affect the risk individually and jointly.

MicroRNAs: Genomics, Biogenesis, Mechanism, and Function
TL;DR: Although they escaped notice until relatively recently, miRNAs comprise one of the more abundant classes of gene regulatory molecules in multicellular organisms and likely influence the output of many protein-coding genes.

The C. elegans heterochronic gene lin-4 encodes small RNAs with antisense complementarity to lin-14
TL;DR: Two small lin-4 transcripts of approximately 22 and 61 nt were identified in C. elegans and found to contain sequences complementary to a repeated sequence element in the 3' untranslated region (UTR) of lin-14 mRNA, suggesting that lin- 4 regulates lin- 14 translation via an antisense RNA-RNA interaction.

TL;DR: A new, bead-based flow cytometric miRNA expression profiling method is used to present a systematic expression analysis of 217 mammalian miRNAs from 334 samples, including multiple human cancers, and finds the miRNA profiles are surprisingly informative, reflecting the developmental lineage and differentiation state of the tumours.

TL;DR: The two RNase III proteins, Drosha and Dicer, may collaborate in the stepwise processing of miRNAs, and have key roles in miRNA-mediated gene regulation in processes such as development and differentiation.
