TLDR
Novel analytical approaches — in particular, liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry — for systems-level analysis of lipids and their interacting partners (lipidomics) now make this field a promising area of biomedical research, with a variety of applications in drug and biomarker development.
Abstract
The crucial role of lipids in cell, tissue and organ physiology is demonstrated by a large number of genetic studies and by many human diseases that involve the disruption of lipid metabolic enzymes and pathways. Examples of such diseases include cancer, diabetes, as well as neurodegenerative and infectious diseases. So far, the explosion of information in the fields of genomics and proteomics has not been matched by a corresponding advancement of knowledge in the field of lipids, which is largely due to the complexity of lipids and the lack of powerful tools for their analysis. Novel analytical approaches--in particular, liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry--for systems-level analysis of lipids and their interacting partners (lipidomics) now make this field a promising area of biomedical research, with a variety of applications in drug and biomarker development.

ER stress sensor Ire1 deploys a divergent transcriptional program in response to lipid bilayer stress

TL;DR: The UPR program is revealed as a broad-spectrum compensatory pathway in which LBS and proteotoxic stress-induced UPR deploy divergent transcriptional programs and could be exploited for future therapeutic intervention.

Magnetic resonance imaging assessment of skeletal muscle changes following chronic denervation in the dog

TL;DR: There was a significant relationship between the 9-point body score (BCS) assessment and body fat percentages calculated on the basis of girth and hock measurements and the normal patterns of fat deposition with increasing body condition scores were attempted.

Novel LC-MS tools for diagnosing inborn errors of metabolism

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors discuss directions and aspects of liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry (LC-MS) based laboratory diagnosing in the field of inborn errors of metabolism.

Erratum: The emerging field of lipidomics

TL;DR: A comparison study of six drug discovery studies over a 12-month period finds that three of them showed clear trends in the development of new drugs and the use of these drugs was associated with an up-and-down response in women.

Blood plasma biomarkers correlating with hepatic lipidosis in dairy cows

TL;DR: This proof-of-concept study indicates that metabolomic profiles, including both amino acids and lipids, distinguish hepatic lipidosis from other peripartal disorders and, hence, provide a promising new tool for the diagnosis of hepatic cholesterolosis.

A rapid method of total lipid extraction and purification.

TL;DR: The lipid decomposition studies in frozen fish have led to the development of a simple and rapid method for the extraction and purification of lipids from biological materials that has been applied to fish muscle and may easily be adapted to use with other tissues.

Functional rafts in cell membranes

Kai Simons, +1 more
- 05 Jun 1997 -
TL;DR: A new aspect of cell membrane structure is presented, based on the dynamic clustering of sphingolipids and cholesterol to form rafts that move within the fluid bilayer that function as platforms for the attachment of proteins when membranes are moved around inside the cell and during signal transduction.

Defective LPS Signaling in C3H/HeJ and C57BL/10ScCr Mice: Mutations in Tlr4 Gene

TL;DR: The mammalian Tlr4 protein has been adapted primarily to subserve the recognition of LPS and presumably transduces the LPS signal across the plasma membrane.
