TLDR
Novel analytical approaches — in particular, liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry — for systems-level analysis of lipids and their interacting partners (lipidomics) now make this field a promising area of biomedical research, with a variety of applications in drug and biomarker development.
Abstract
The crucial role of lipids in cell, tissue and organ physiology is demonstrated by a large number of genetic studies and by many human diseases that involve the disruption of lipid metabolic enzymes and pathways. Examples of such diseases include cancer, diabetes, as well as neurodegenerative and infectious diseases. So far, the explosion of information in the fields of genomics and proteomics has not been matched by a corresponding advancement of knowledge in the field of lipids, which is largely due to the complexity of lipids and the lack of powerful tools for their analysis. Novel analytical approaches--in particular, liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry--for systems-level analysis of lipids and their interacting partners (lipidomics) now make this field a promising area of biomedical research, with a variety of applications in drug and biomarker development.

Lipidomic Biomarkers of Extracellular Vesicles for the Prediction of Preterm Birth in the Early Second Trimester

TL;DR: Differences in lipids in plasma, microvesicles (MVs) and exosomes (Exos) between 27 preterm and 66 full-term pregnant women in the early second trimester are investigated using an untargeted lipidomics approach to provide useful information for the early prediction of preterm birth and a better understanding of the underlying mechanisms and intervention of pre term birth.

Dual parallel mass spectrometry for lipid and vitamin D analysis.

TL;DR: This work describes the approaches that employ two mass spectrometers in parallel or in a column-switching configuration that allows multiple ionization modes and types of experiments to be conducted simultaneously during a single chromatographic run, and demonstrates how use of two systems can reduce or eliminate the need for repeat injections and repetitive experiments.

Functional rafts in cell membranes

TL;DR: A new aspect of cell membrane structure is presented, based on the dynamic clustering of sphingolipids and cholesterol to form rafts that move within the fluid bilayer that function as platforms for the attachment of proteins when membranes are moved around inside the cell and during signal transduction.

Defective LPS Signaling in C3H/HeJ and C57BL/10ScCr Mice: Mutations in Tlr4 Gene

TL;DR: The mammalian Tlr4 protein has been adapted primarily to subserve the recognition of LPS and presumably transduces the LPS signal across the plasma membrane.
