TLDR
In this article, the authors review past and future trends in sludge handling, focusing mainly at thermal processes (e.g. pyrolysis, wet oxidation, gasification) and the utilization of sewage sludge in cement manufacture as a co-fuel.Abstract:
The European Union has made progress in dealing with municipal wastewater in individual countries and as a corporate entity. However, it intends to make still further and substantial progress over the next 15 years. Currently, the most widely available options in the EU are the agriculture utilization, the waste disposal sites, the land reclamation and restoration, the incineration and other novel uses. The selection of an option on a local basis reflects local or national, cultural, historical, geographical, legal, political and economic circumstances. The degree of flexibility varies from country to country. In any case sludge treatment and disposal should always be considered as an integral part of treatment of wastewater. There is a wide range of other uses for sludge, which exploit its energy or chemical content, namely the thermal processes. The present paper sought to review past and future trends in sludge handling, focusing mainly at thermal processes (e.g. pyrolysis, wet oxidation, gasification) and the utilization of sewage sludge in cement manufacture as a co-fuel.read more

Eisenia fetida and biochar synergistically alleviate the heavy metals content during valorization of biosolids via enhancing vermicompost quality.
Muhammad Bilal Khan,Xiaoqiang Cui,Ghulam Jilani,Ugit Lazzat,Afsheen Zehra,Yasir Hamid,Bilal Hussain,Lin Tang,Xiaoe Yang,Zhenli He +9 more
TL;DR: In conclusion, amending the SS + KW mixture with 10% (w/w) PPB for vermicomposting rendered higher count of cocoons, growth rate and reproduction rate of earthworms, which ultimately produce nutrients-rich verMicompost lower in heavy metals.

Effect of moisture content in sewage sludge on air gasification
TL;DR: In this paper, the properties of gasification for three kinds of sewage sludges with different moisture contents were studied in an external heated downdraft reactor under a stable air flux of 0.05 m3/h and a constant gasification temperature of 800(C).

Recent Advances in Paper Mill Sludge Management
Marko Likon,Polonca Trebše +1 more
TL;DR: The management of wastes, in particular of industrial waste, in an economically and environmentally acceptable manner is one of the most critical issues facing modern industry, mainly due to the increased difficulties in properly locating disposal works and complying with even more stringent environmental quality requirements imposed by legislation as discussed by the authors.

Thermo-economic analysis of a novel cogeneration system for sewage sludge treatment
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a combined heat and power (CHP) system for sludge drying in wastewater treatment plants, where syngas derived from sludge gasification and waste vegetable oil was used instead of fossil fuels.

Sequential extraction procedure for the speciation of particulate trace metals
TL;DR: In this paper, an analytical procedure involving sequential chemicai extractions was developed for the partitioning of particulate trace metals (Cd, Co, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, Fe, and Mn) into five fractions: exchangeable, bound to carbonates, binding to Fe-Mn oxides and bound to organic matter.
