Abstract: Herein we demonstrate that the C40 cluster molecule is easily formed to Td symmetry structure and its ground state is 5A2 open shell with four unpaired electrons. These four unpaired electrons are located at the tip points of the Td symmetry structure. This work also indicates that these four unpaired electrons can easily react with a single valence atom, such as hydrogen or halogen atoms, to form a stable carbon hydrogen cluster molecule, C40H4, and carbon halogen cluster molecules, C40X4 (X=F, Cl, Br, I), respectively. The PM3 semiempirical molecular orbital method from Gaussian 94W computer program package was applied very well to these cluster molecules. According to the results in this study, the structures of geometrical optimization, ionization potential, energy gap, heat of formation, atomization energy, vibration frequency, and the remaining data of C40H4 and C40X4 cluster molecules. The above-calculated data prove that these unknown cluster molecules are stable and have a stable capacity similar to 1,3,5,7-tetrahaloadamantane molecules. They can be possibly synthesized experimentally in the near future. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Int J Quant Chem 68: 273–284, 1998

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that some of the multi-drug resistant cancer cells may also become radioresistant to γ-radiation, and among the resistant sub-lines, MCF-7/Pac and MCF/Doc cells were significantly cross-resistant to irradiation compared to the sensitive cells.
Abstract: Background and purpose: Radiotherapy is used for the treatment of malignant tumours, and may be used as the primary therapy. It is also common to combine radiotherapy with surgery, chemotherapy, hormone therapy or some combination of them. Even if the tumour is treated intensively, women diagnosed with breast cancer may develop a recurrence. Most recurrences may be in the form of distant metastases, development of multi-drug resistance phenotype or both together. This study demonstrated that some of the multi-drug resistant cancer cells may also become radioresistant.Materials and Methods: Chemoresistance in paclitaxel (MCF-7/Pac), docetaxel (MCF-7/Doc), vincristine (MCF-7/Vinc), doxorubicin (MCF-7/Dox) and zoledronic acid (MCF-7/Zol) resistant MCF-7 cells were demonstrated by XTT assay. MDR1 gene expression was detected by real-time PCR in human MCF-7 breast cancer cells. Drug resistant and sensitive cells were exposed to γ-radiation and development of radioresistance was investigated. Results: Results have indicated that paclitaxel, docetaxel, vincristine, doxorubicin and zoledronic acid–selected cells gained varying degrees of resistance to their selective drugs when compared with original MCF-7/S. MCF-7/Pac, MCF-7/Doc, MCF-7/Vinc and MCF-7/Dox cells have all acquired MDR1 expression. Among the resistant sub-lines, MCF-7/Pac and MCF-7/Doc cells were significantly cross-resistant to irradiation compared to the sensitive cells. Conclusion: MCF-7/Pac and MCF-7/Doc cell lines were found radioresistant to γ-radiation. On the contrary, doxorubicin, vincristine and zoledronic acid resistant cancer cells were still sensitive to radiation.

TL;DR: In this article, the antibacterial effects of the BC/Ag composite powders against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus were assessed from the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) and minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBCs) method, and an excellent antibacterial performance was discovered.
Abstract: Bamboo charcoal supporting silver (BC/Ag) was prepared by activation and chemical reduction. The BC/Ag composites were characterized by silver particle size and distribution, silver ion (Ag + ) release and antibacterial properties. Scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM) showed that the Ag particles were distributed uniformly on the BC matrix. The Ag particle size was found to be less than 150 nm based on TEM. The Ag + release increased initially which was followed by a marginal increase between the 8th and 24th hour. Composites contained higher amounts of silver exhibited a further rise in Ag + release from the 24-hours of storage in water. The antibacterial effects of the BC/Ag composite powders against Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus were assessed from the minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) and minimum bactericidal concentrations (MBCs) method, and an excellent antibacterial performance was discovered.

TL;DR: Cutaneous metastatic lesions in colorectal cancers must be evaluated as a sign of advanced disease and treatment protocols should be determined accordingly.
Abstract: In this case report, our aim was to emphasize that cutaneous involvement can be seen at the time of diagnosis or during the clinical course of visceral organ cancers in general and in colorectal cancers particularly. We also aimed to demonstrate that cutaneous lesions occurring in patients under follow up for visceral organ cancers could be metastases. A rapid progressing scalp lesion was detected in a newly diagnosed rectal cancer patient and the tru-cut biopsy revealed adenocarcinoma metastasis. This patient died due to a myocardial infarction during neoadjuvant chemotherapy. Cutaneous metastatic lesions in colorectal cancers must be evaluated as a sign of advanced disease and treatment protocols should be determined accordingly.

TL;DR: It is found that not being circumcised might negatively affect individuals in adulthood when it comes to body image and sexual satisfaction, however, both improve after circumcision.
Abstract: Introduction: Our aim was to investigate the psychological and sexual effects of circumcision in adult men, and analyze these changes following circumcision. Methods: We included 37 adults who applied to our clinic for circumcision and who did not have any psychiatric or urologic disorders and age-matched 30 controls in our study. Body Cathexis Scale (BCS), Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS), and Premature Ejaculation Diagnostic Tool (PEDT) were applied to the study group twice, once before and once three months after circumcision, and only once in the control group. Also, intravaginal ejaculation latency time (IELT) was noted and premature ejaculation (PE) evaluation was done. Intra- and intergroup comparisons were performed. Results: The two groups were similar with regard to demographic data. Comparison of preoperative BCS and LSAS scores with the scores of the control group showed significant differences (p=0.003, p0.05, and p>0.05, respectively). Scores of all scales showed significant improvements postoperatively. Also, PEDT scores and IELT changes before and after circumcision were significant in the study group, but not when compared to the control group. Conclusions: Our results indicated that social anxiety and anxiety levels decreased after circumcision in adult Turkish men, and their body gratification increased. We found that not being circumcised might negatively affect individuals in adulthood when it comes to body image and sexual satisfaction, however, both improve after circumcision.
