TL;DR: The new dressing, containing either amikacin or gentamycin, reduced the number of living bacterial cells in the infected tissue almost to zero during the course of observation and may be effective in the treatment of infected wounds in patients.
Abstract: A new antibacterial dressing for infected wounds was prepared. The dressing was composed of a collagen membrane and collagen sponge; both biomaterials possess good tissue biocompatibility. An active antibacterial layer of limited hydrophobicity was placed between the membrane and the sponge and into the upper part of the sponge. The dressing contained gentamycin or amikacin at concentrations of 0.3 μg/cm2 (loading level of the drug utilized during preparation of the dressing). Either the antibiotic or its concentration easily can be changed in the dressing by the manufacturer. The dressing was stable for several months. The antibiotic was released slowly from the dressing in in vitro experiments for 3 days. Antibacterial activity of the dressing was tested using a mouse wound model experimentally infected with Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Both dressings, containing either amikacin or gentamycin, reduced the number of living bacterial cells in the infected tissue almost to zero during the course of observation. The new dressing may be effective in the treatment of infected wounds in patients. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

TL;DR: It is shown that the suggested adaptable fuzzy system has the capability of imitating the decision making process of the drivers and dispatchers and of showing a level of competence which is comparable with the level of their competence.
Abstract: A useful routing system should have the capability of supporting the driver effectively in deciding on an optimum route to his preference. This paper describes the problem of choice of road route under conditions of uncertainty which drivers are faced with as they carry out their task of transportation. The choice of road route depends on the needs stated in the transport requirements, the location of the users and the conditions under which the transport task is performed. The route guidance system developed in this paper is an Adaptive Neuro Fuzzy Inference Guidance System (ANFIGS) that provides instructions to drivers based upon "optimum" route solutions. A dynamic route guidance (DRG) system routes drivers using the current traffic conditions. ANFIGS can provide actual routing advice to the driver in light of the real-time traffic conditions. In the DRG system for the choice of road route, the experiential knowledge of drivers and dispatchers is accumulated in a neuro-fuzzy network which has the capability of generalizing a solution. The adaptive neuro-fuzzy network is trained to select an optimal road route on the basis of standard and additional criteria. As a result of the research, it is shown that the suggested adaptable fuzzy system, which has the ability to learn, has the capability of imitating the decision making process of the drivers and dispatchers and of showing a level of competence which is comparable with the level of their competence.

TL;DR: In this article, a theoretical study of a waveguide with a uniformly curved section is presented within the envelope function approximation, and exact expression of the scattering matrix of the system is derived.
Abstract: A theoretical study of a waveguide with a uniformly curved section is presented within the envelope function approximation. Utilizing analytical solutions in each part of the waveguide, exact expression of the scattering matrix of the system is derived. Based on it, a conductance of the waveguide is calculated for the wide range of the bend angle and radius. It is shown that a quasibound state formed as a result of the bend, at some critical parameters of the curve becomes a true bound state with infinite lifetime. It has its degenerate continuum counterpart, but does not interact with it. As a result of a constructive resonant interference in the bend, dip in the conductance, which is an essential property for the noncritical values, vanishes with full transmission being observable instead. Mathematical and physical interpretation of these results is given, and characteristic features of the critical parameters are discussed. Comparison with quantum waveguides with other types of nonuniformity is performed.

TL;DR: A half-life kinetic model has been proposed to predict the half-lives of explosive oxidation in the goethite/H2O2 system and showed that target compounds were adsorbed on the surface ofGoethite while the oxidation was proceeding.
