Abstract

Raman spectrum of graphene and graphene layers.

TL;DR: This work shows that graphene's electronic structure is captured in its Raman spectrum that clearly evolves with the number of layers, and allows unambiguous, high-throughput, nondestructive identification of graphene layers, which is critically lacking in this emerging research area.
Journal ArticleDOI

Finding and evaluating community structure in networks.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the algorithms proposed are highly effective at discovering community structure in both computer-generated and real-world network data, and can be used to shed light on the sometimes dauntingly complex structure of networked systems.

A programmable dual-RNA-guided DNA endonuclease in adaptive bacterial immunity.

TL;DR: This study reveals a family of endonucleases that use dual-RNAs for site-specific DNA cleavage and highlights the potential to exploit the system for RNA-programmable genome editing.

Understanding the Warburg Effect: The Metabolic Requirements of Cell Proliferation

TL;DR: It is proposed that the metabolism of cancer cells, and indeed all proliferating cells, is adapted to facilitate the uptake and incorporation of nutrients into the biomass needed to produce a new cell.

p53- and drug-induced apoptotic responses mediated by BH3-only proteins puma and noxa.

TL;DR: In mice with either noxa or puma disrupted, decreased DNA damage–induced apoptosis in fibroblasts is observed, although only loss of Puma protected lymphocytes from cell death, and Puma deficiency protected cells against diverse p53-independent cytotoxic insults.

TGF-β and BMP Signaling in Osteoblast Differentiation and Bone Formation

TL;DR: Recent advances in molecular and genetic studies using gene targeting in mice enable a better understanding of TGF-β/BMP signaling in bone and in the signaling networks underlying osteoblast differentiation and bone formation.

Stable prenucleation calcium carbonate clusters.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that dissolved calcium carbonate in fact contains stable prenucleation ion clusters forming even in undersaturated solution, and specified complex crystal structures challenge the classical view on nucleation considering the formation of metastable ion clusters.

Nanofocusing of Optical Energy in Tapered Plasmonic Waveguides

TL;DR: It is predicted theoretically that surface plAsmon polaritons propagating toward the tip of a tapered plasmonic waveguide are slowed down and asymptotically stopped when they tend to the tip, never actually reaching it (the travel time to the Tip is logarithmically divergent).

Decapping and Decay of Messenger RNA Occur in Cytoplasmic Processing Bodies

TL;DR: The flux of mRNAs between polysomes and P bodies is defined as a critical aspect of cytoplasmic mRNA metabolism and a possible site for regulation of mRNA degradation.
