Abstract

Raman spectrum of graphene and graphene layers.

TL;DR: This work shows that graphene's electronic structure is captured in its Raman spectrum that clearly evolves with the number of layers, and allows unambiguous, high-throughput, nondestructive identification of graphene layers, which is critically lacking in this emerging research area.
Journal ArticleDOI

Finding and evaluating community structure in networks.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the algorithms proposed are highly effective at discovering community structure in both computer-generated and real-world network data, and can be used to shed light on the sometimes dauntingly complex structure of networked systems.
Journal ArticleDOI

A programmable dual-RNA-guided DNA endonuclease in adaptive bacterial immunity.

TL;DR: This study reveals a family of endonucleases that use dual-RNAs for site-specific DNA cleavage and highlights the potential to exploit the system for RNA-programmable genome editing.

Understanding the Warburg Effect: The Metabolic Requirements of Cell Proliferation

TL;DR: It is proposed that the metabolism of cancer cells, and indeed all proliferating cells, is adapted to facilitate the uptake and incorporation of nutrients into the biomass needed to produce a new cell.

Scaffold Proteins: Hubs for Controlling the Flow of Cellular Information

TL;DR: Although most scaffolds use a simple tethering mechanism to increase the efficiency of interaction between individual partner molecules, these proteins can also exert complex allosteric control over their partners and are themselves the target of regulation.
Journal ArticleDOI

Environmental programming of stress responses through DNA methylation: life at the interface between a dynamic environment and a fixed genome.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the structural modifications of the DNA can be established through environmental programming and that, in spite of the inherent stability of this epigenomic marker, it is dynamic and potentially reversible.

Human Fetal Hemoglobin Expression Is Regulated by the Developmental Stage-Specific Repressor BCL11A

TL;DR: BCL11A emerges as a therapeutic target for reactivation of HbF in β-hemoglobin disorders and occupies several discrete sites in the β-globin gene cluster, consistent with a direct role of BCL 11A in globin gene regulation.
Journal ArticleDOI

Mosaic Organization of Neural Stem Cells in the Adult Brain

TL;DR: It is shown that postnatal stem cells in different regions produce different types of neurons, even when heterotopically grafted or grown in culture, which suggests that rather than being plastic and homogeneous, neural stem cells are a restricted and diverse population of progenitors.

A Virus in a Fungus in a Plant: Three-Way Symbiosis Required for Thermal Tolerance

TL;DR: The characterized virus-infected fungus confers heat tolerance not only to its native monocot host but also to a eudicot host, which suggests that the underlying mechanism involves pathways conserved between these two groups of plants.
