Abstract

Response to Comments on "Impacts of Biodiversity Loss on Ocean Ecosystem Services"

TL;DR: It is shown that globally declining fisheries catch trends cannot be explained by random processes and are consistent with declining stock abundance trends, and may provide a benchmark against which to assess the effectiveness of conservation measures.

Obestatin, a Peptide Encoded by the Ghrelin Gene, Opposes Ghrelin's Effects on Food Intake

TL;DR: Contrary to the appetite-stimulating effects of ghrelin, treatment of rats with obestatin suppressed food intake, inhibited jejunal contraction, and decreased body-weight gain.

Tuning the graphene work function by electric field effect

TL;DR: Variation of the work function for single and bilayer graphene devices measured by scanning Kelvin probe microscopy (SKPM) is reported, by use of the electric field effect.

The Origins of Scaling in Cities

TL;DR: All cities may evolve according to a small set of basic principles that operate locally, which are shown to be independent of city size and might be a useful means to evaluate urban planning strategies.

Major Ecological Transitions in Wild Sunflowers Facilitated by Hybridization

TL;DR: The same combinations of parental chromosomal segments required to generate extreme phenotypes in synthetic hybrids also occurred in ancient hybrids, and this possibility was tested through phenotypic and genomic comparisons of ancient and synthetic hybrids.

Raman spectrum of graphene and graphene layers.

TL;DR: This work shows that graphene's electronic structure is captured in its Raman spectrum that clearly evolves with the number of layers, and allows unambiguous, high-throughput, nondestructive identification of graphene layers, which is critically lacking in this emerging research area.

Finding and evaluating community structure in networks.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the algorithms proposed are highly effective at discovering community structure in both computer-generated and real-world network data, and can be used to shed light on the sometimes dauntingly complex structure of networked systems.

A programmable dual-RNA-guided DNA endonuclease in adaptive bacterial immunity.

TL;DR: This study reveals a family of endonucleases that use dual-RNAs for site-specific DNA cleavage and highlights the potential to exploit the system for RNA-programmable genome editing.

Understanding the Warburg Effect: The Metabolic Requirements of Cell Proliferation

TL;DR: It is proposed that the metabolism of cancer cells, and indeed all proliferating cells, is adapted to facilitate the uptake and incorporation of nutrients into the biomass needed to produce a new cell.
