Abstract

Raman spectrum of graphene and graphene layers.

TL;DR: This work shows that graphene's electronic structure is captured in its Raman spectrum that clearly evolves with the number of layers, and allows unambiguous, high-throughput, nondestructive identification of graphene layers, which is critically lacking in this emerging research area.
Journal ArticleDOI

Finding and evaluating community structure in networks.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the algorithms proposed are highly effective at discovering community structure in both computer-generated and real-world network data, and can be used to shed light on the sometimes dauntingly complex structure of networked systems.

A programmable dual-RNA-guided DNA endonuclease in adaptive bacterial immunity.

TL;DR: This study reveals a family of endonucleases that use dual-RNAs for site-specific DNA cleavage and highlights the potential to exploit the system for RNA-programmable genome editing.

Understanding the Warburg Effect: The Metabolic Requirements of Cell Proliferation

TL;DR: It is proposed that the metabolism of cancer cells, and indeed all proliferating cells, is adapted to facilitate the uptake and incorporation of nutrients into the biomass needed to produce a new cell.

Using Gene Expression Noise to Understand Gene Regulation

TL;DR: This review highlights several studies that used gene expression variability to develop a quantitative understanding of the mechanisms and dynamics of gene regulation.

Noble metal nanoparticles for water purification: A critical review

TL;DR: The most important reason for the use of noble metals is the minimal reactivity at the bulk scale, which can be explained by a number of concepts such as electrochemical potential, relativisitic contraction, molecular orbital theory, etc.

Cortex is driven by weak but synchronously active thalamocortical synapses.

TL;DR: A mechanism of cortical activation by which thalamic input alone can drive cortex is suggested by measuring in vivo the excitatory postsynaptic potential evoked by a single synaptic connection and finding that thalamocortical synapses have low efficacy.
Journal ArticleDOI

Fast DNA Translocation through a Solid-State Nanopore

TL;DR: A theoretical model where hydrodynamic drag on the ection of the polymer outside the pore is the dominant force counteracting the electrical driving force is presented, and a power-law scaling with an exponent of 1.22 is derived in good agreement with the data.

The Genome of the Basidiomycetous Yeast and Human Pathogen Cryptococcus Neoformans

TL;DR: Comparison of two phenotypically distinct strains reveals variation in gene content in addition to sequence polymorphisms between the genomes, and the genome is rich in transposons, many of which cluster at candidate centromeric regions.
