Abstract

Advances in methods and algorithms in a modern quantum chemistry program package

TL;DR: Specific developments discussed include fast methods for density functional theory calculations, linear scaling evaluation of energies, NMR chemical shifts and electric properties, fast auxiliary basis function methods for correlated energies and gradients, equation-of-motion coupled cluster methods for ground and excited states, geminal wavefunctions, embedding methods and techniques for exploring potential energy surfaces.

The Transcriptional Landscape of the Yeast Genome Defined by RNA Sequencing

TL;DR: A quantitative sequencing-based method is developed for mapping transcribed regions, in which complementary DNA fragments are subjected to high-throughput sequencing and mapped to the genome, and it is demonstrated that most (74.5%) of the nonrepetitive sequence of the yeast genome is transcribed.

A "Silent" Polymorphism in the MDR1 Gene Changes Substrate Specificity

TL;DR: It is hypothesized that the presence of a rare codon, marked by the synonymous polymorphism, affects the timing of cotranslational folding and insertion of P-gp into the membrane, thereby altering the structure of substrate and inhibitor interaction sites.

Global Iron Connections Between Desert Dust, Ocean Biogeochemistry, and Climate

TL;DR: The iron cycle, in which iron-containing soil dust is transported from land through the atmosphere to the oceans, affecting ocean biogeochemistry and hence having feedback effects on climate and dust production, is reviewed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Complement factor H variant increases the risk of age-related macular degeneration.

TL;DR: DNA resequencing of the complement factor H gene within this haplotype revealed a common coding variant that significantly increases the risk for AMD with odds ratios between 2.45 and 5.57, which likely explains ∼43% of AMD in older adults.

Raman spectrum of graphene and graphene layers.

TL;DR: This work shows that graphene's electronic structure is captured in its Raman spectrum that clearly evolves with the number of layers, and allows unambiguous, high-throughput, nondestructive identification of graphene layers, which is critically lacking in this emerging research area.
Journal ArticleDOI

Finding and evaluating community structure in networks.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the algorithms proposed are highly effective at discovering community structure in both computer-generated and real-world network data, and can be used to shed light on the sometimes dauntingly complex structure of networked systems.
Journal ArticleDOI

A programmable dual-RNA-guided DNA endonuclease in adaptive bacterial immunity.

TL;DR: This study reveals a family of endonucleases that use dual-RNAs for site-specific DNA cleavage and highlights the potential to exploit the system for RNA-programmable genome editing.

Understanding the Warburg Effect: The Metabolic Requirements of Cell Proliferation

TL;DR: It is proposed that the metabolism of cancer cells, and indeed all proliferating cells, is adapted to facilitate the uptake and incorporation of nutrients into the biomass needed to produce a new cell.
