Abstract

Raman spectrum of graphene and graphene layers.

TL;DR: This work shows that graphene's electronic structure is captured in its Raman spectrum that clearly evolves with the number of layers, and allows unambiguous, high-throughput, nondestructive identification of graphene layers, which is critically lacking in this emerging research area.
Journal ArticleDOI

Finding and evaluating community structure in networks.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the algorithms proposed are highly effective at discovering community structure in both computer-generated and real-world network data, and can be used to shed light on the sometimes dauntingly complex structure of networked systems.

A programmable dual-RNA-guided DNA endonuclease in adaptive bacterial immunity.

TL;DR: This study reveals a family of endonucleases that use dual-RNAs for site-specific DNA cleavage and highlights the potential to exploit the system for RNA-programmable genome editing.

Understanding the Warburg Effect: The Metabolic Requirements of Cell Proliferation

TL;DR: It is proposed that the metabolism of cancer cells, and indeed all proliferating cells, is adapted to facilitate the uptake and incorporation of nutrients into the biomass needed to produce a new cell.

The ecology of the microbiome: Networks, competition, and stability

TL;DR: This finding indicates that hosts can benefit from microbial competition when this competition dampens cooperative networks and increases stability, and indicates that stability is promoted by limiting positive feedbacks and weakening ecological interactions.

Multicolor Super-Resolution Imaging with Photo-Switchable Fluorescent Probes

TL;DR: A family of photo-switchable fluorescent probes is introduced and multicolor stochastic optical reconstruction microscopy (STORM) is demonstrated, to facilitate direct visualization of molecular interactions at the nanometer scale.

Substrate Elasticity Regulates Skeletal Muscle Stem Cell Self-Renewal in Culture

TL;DR: Using a bioengineered substrate to recapitulate key biophysical and biochemical niche features in conjunction with a highly automated single-cell tracking algorithm, it is shown that substrate elasticity is a potent regulator of MuSC fate in culture.

Demonstrated brain insulin resistance in Alzheimer’s disease patients is associated with IGF-1 resistance, IRS-1 dysregulation, and cognitive decline

TL;DR: Brain insulin resistance appears to be an early and common feature of AD, a phenomenon accompanied by IGF-1 resistance and closely associated with IRS-1 dysfunction potentially triggered by Aβ oligomers and yet promoting cognitive decline independent of classic AD pathology.
Journal ArticleDOI

PLUMED: a portable plugin for free-energy calculations with molecular dynamics

TL;DR: A series of routines that can be interfaced with the most popular classical molecular dynamics codes through a simple patching procedure, which leaves the possibility for the user to exploit many different MD engines depending on the system simulated and on the computational resources available.
