Abstract

Raman spectrum of graphene and graphene layers.

TL;DR: This work shows that graphene's electronic structure is captured in its Raman spectrum that clearly evolves with the number of layers, and allows unambiguous, high-throughput, nondestructive identification of graphene layers, which is critically lacking in this emerging research area.

Finding and evaluating community structure in networks.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the algorithms proposed are highly effective at discovering community structure in both computer-generated and real-world network data, and can be used to shed light on the sometimes dauntingly complex structure of networked systems.

A programmable dual-RNA-guided DNA endonuclease in adaptive bacterial immunity.

TL;DR: This study reveals a family of endonucleases that use dual-RNAs for site-specific DNA cleavage and highlights the potential to exploit the system for RNA-programmable genome editing.

Understanding the Warburg Effect: The Metabolic Requirements of Cell Proliferation

TL;DR: It is proposed that the metabolism of cancer cells, and indeed all proliferating cells, is adapted to facilitate the uptake and incorporation of nutrients into the biomass needed to produce a new cell.

Bayesian surprise attracts human attention.

TL;DR: A formal Bayesian definition of surprise is proposed to capture subjective aspects of sensory information and it is shown that Bayesian surprise is a strong attractor of human attention, with 72% of all gaze shifts directed towards locations more surprising than the average.

In Situ Observation of the Electrochemical Lithiation of a Single SnO2 Nanowire Electrode

TL;DR: Because lithiation-induced volume expansion, plasticity, and pulverization of electrode materials are the major mechanical effects that plague the performance and lifetime of high-capacity anodes in lithium-ion batteries, these observations provide important mechanistic insight for the design of advanced batteries.

DNA methylation-related chromatin remodeling in activity-dependent BDNF gene regulation.

TL;DR: It is reported that increased synthesis of brain-derived neurotrophic factor in neurons after depolarization correlates with a decrease in CpG methylation within the regulatory region of the Bdnf gene, suggesting that DNA methylation–related chromatin remodeling is important for activity-dependent gene regulation that may be critical for neural plasticity.

The paleozoic origin of enzymatic lignin decomposition reconstructed from 31 fungal genomes

- 29 Jun 2012 -
TL;DR: Comparative analyses of 31 fungal genomes suggest that lignin-degrading peroxidases expanded in the lineage leading to the ancestor of the Agaricomycetes, which is reconstructed as a white rot species, and then contracted in parallel lineages leading to brown rot and mycorrhizal species.

Regulation of Aging and Age-Related Disease by DAF-16 and Heat-Shock Factor

TL;DR: The findings suggest that HSF-1 and DAF-16 together activate expression of specific genes, including genes encoding small heat-shock proteins, which in turn promote longevity, which couple the normal aging process to this type of age-related disease.
