Abstract

A Catalog of Reference Genomes from the Human Microbiome

TL;DR: Results from an initial reference genome sequencing of 178 microbial genomes allow for ~40% of random sequences from the microbiome of the gastrointestinal tract to be associated with organisms based on the match criteria used, suggesting that the authors are still far from saturating microbial species genetic data sets.

Inferring Nonneutral Evolution from Human-Chimp-Mouse Orthologous Gene Trios

TL;DR: Partitions of genes into inferred biological classes identified accelerated evolution in several functional classes, including olfaction and nuclear transport and human-accelerated genes are significantly more likely to underlie major known Mendelian disorders.

A bacterial effector acts as a plant transcription factor and induces a cell size regulator.

TL;DR: It is shown that AvrBs3 induces the expression of a master regulator of cell size, upa20, which encodes a transcription factor containing a basic helix-loop-helix domain that provokes developmental reprogramming of host cells by mimicking eukaryotic transcription factors.

Supporting Online Material for Three-Dimensional, Flexible Nanoscale Field-Effect Transistors as Localized Bioprobes

TL;DR: 3D nanoFET probes exhibited conductance and sensitivity in aqueous solution, independent of large mechanical deflections, and demonstrated high pH sensitivity, and 3D nanoprobes modified with phospholipid bilayers can enter single cells to allow robust recording of intracellular potentials.

Biological networks: the tinkerer as an engineer.

TL;DR: This viewpoint comments on recent advances in understanding the design principles of biological networks and highlights the surprising discovery of “good-engineering” principles in biochemical circuitry that evolved by random tinkering.

Raman spectrum of graphene and graphene layers.

TL;DR: This work shows that graphene's electronic structure is captured in its Raman spectrum that clearly evolves with the number of layers, and allows unambiguous, high-throughput, nondestructive identification of graphene layers, which is critically lacking in this emerging research area.

Finding and evaluating community structure in networks.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the algorithms proposed are highly effective at discovering community structure in both computer-generated and real-world network data, and can be used to shed light on the sometimes dauntingly complex structure of networked systems.

A programmable dual-RNA-guided DNA endonuclease in adaptive bacterial immunity.

TL;DR: This study reveals a family of endonucleases that use dual-RNAs for site-specific DNA cleavage and highlights the potential to exploit the system for RNA-programmable genome editing.

Understanding the Warburg Effect: The Metabolic Requirements of Cell Proliferation

TL;DR: It is proposed that the metabolism of cancer cells, and indeed all proliferating cells, is adapted to facilitate the uptake and incorporation of nutrients into the biomass needed to produce a new cell.
