Abstract

Genome-Wide RNAi Analysis of Growth and Viability in Drosophila Cells

TL;DR: A high-throughput RNA-interference screen of 19,470 double-stranded RNAs in cultured cells to characterize the function of nearly all predicted Drosophila genes in cell growth and viability found 438 dsRNAs that identified essential genes, among which 80% lacked mutant alleles.
Journal ArticleDOI

Sexual selection in males and females.

TL;DR: It is shown that both intrasexual competition between females and male choice of mating partners are common, leading to strong sexual selection in females and, in extreme cases, to reversals in the usual pattern of sex differences in behavior and morphology.

Calculation of the lattice constant of solids with semilocal functionals

TL;DR: In this article, the generalized gradient approximation (GGA) is used for the calculations of the geometry and electronic structure of solids, and the TPSS (meta-GGA approximation) function is proposed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Pain regulation by non-neuronal cells and inflammation.

TL;DR: This work reviews how non-neuronal cells interact with nociceptive neurons by secreting neuroactive signaling molecules that modulate pain and discusses new therapeutic strategies to control neuroinflammation for the prevention and treatment of chronic pain.
Journal ArticleDOI

Heterogeneity in Oscillator Networks: Are Smaller Worlds Easier to Synchronize?

TL;DR: It is found that networks with a homogeneous distribution of connectivity are more synchronizable than heterogeneous ones, even though the average network distance is larger.

Raman spectrum of graphene and graphene layers.

TL;DR: This work shows that graphene's electronic structure is captured in its Raman spectrum that clearly evolves with the number of layers, and allows unambiguous, high-throughput, nondestructive identification of graphene layers, which is critically lacking in this emerging research area.
Journal ArticleDOI

Finding and evaluating community structure in networks.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the algorithms proposed are highly effective at discovering community structure in both computer-generated and real-world network data, and can be used to shed light on the sometimes dauntingly complex structure of networked systems.
Journal ArticleDOI

A programmable dual-RNA-guided DNA endonuclease in adaptive bacterial immunity.

TL;DR: This study reveals a family of endonucleases that use dual-RNAs for site-specific DNA cleavage and highlights the potential to exploit the system for RNA-programmable genome editing.

Understanding the Warburg Effect: The Metabolic Requirements of Cell Proliferation

TL;DR: It is proposed that the metabolism of cancer cells, and indeed all proliferating cells, is adapted to facilitate the uptake and incorporation of nutrients into the biomass needed to produce a new cell.
