Abstract

Raman spectrum of graphene and graphene layers.

TL;DR: This work shows that graphene's electronic structure is captured in its Raman spectrum that clearly evolves with the number of layers, and allows unambiguous, high-throughput, nondestructive identification of graphene layers, which is critically lacking in this emerging research area.

Finding and evaluating community structure in networks.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the algorithms proposed are highly effective at discovering community structure in both computer-generated and real-world network data, and can be used to shed light on the sometimes dauntingly complex structure of networked systems.

A programmable dual-RNA-guided DNA endonuclease in adaptive bacterial immunity.

TL;DR: This study reveals a family of endonucleases that use dual-RNAs for site-specific DNA cleavage and highlights the potential to exploit the system for RNA-programmable genome editing.

Understanding the Warburg Effect: The Metabolic Requirements of Cell Proliferation

TL;DR: It is proposed that the metabolism of cancer cells, and indeed all proliferating cells, is adapted to facilitate the uptake and incorporation of nutrients into the biomass needed to produce a new cell.

Formaldehyde stabilization facilitates lignin monomer production during biomass depolymerization

TL;DR: This paper reports that adding formaldehyde during biomass pretreatment produces a soluble lignin fraction that can be converted to guaiacyl and syringyl monomers at near theoretical yields during subsequent hydrogenolysis, three to seven times those obtained without formaldehyde.

Marked Decline in Atmospheric Carbon Dioxide Concentrations During the Paleogene

TL;DR: Stable carbon isotopic values of di-unsaturated alkenones extracted from deep sea cores are used to reconstruct pCO2 from the middle Eocene to the late Oligocene and demonstrate that it ranged between 1000 to 1500 parts per million by volume in the middle to late Eocene, then decreased in several steps during theOligocene, and reached modern levels by the latest Oligaen.

Unlike Bone, Cartilage Regeneration Remains Elusive

TL;DR: Bone-regeneration successes are used to highlight cartilage- Regeneration challenges: such as selecting appropriate cell sources and scaffolds, creating biomechanically suitable tissues, and integrating to native tissue.

Global analysis of Cdk1 substrate phosphorylation sites provides insights into evolution

TL;DR: It is proposed that the regulation of protein function by phosphorylation often depends on simple nonspecific mechanisms that disrupt or enhance protein-protein interactions and the gain or loss of phosphorylated sites in rapidly evolving regions could facilitate the evolution of kinase-signaling circuits.
