Abstract

Long-Term Aridity Changes in the Western United States

TL;DR: Using gridded drought reconstructions that cover most of the western United States over the past 1200 years, it is shown that this drought pales in comparison to an earlier period of elevated aridity and epic drought in AD 900 to 1300, an interval broadly consistent with the Medieval Warm Period.

Pretreatment of lignocellulose: Formation of inhibitory by-products and strategies for minimizing their effects

TL;DR: The importance of management of inhibition problems is envisaged to increase as issues that become increasingly relevant will include the possibility to use recalcitrant feedstocks, obtaining high product yields and high productivity, minimizing the charges of enzymes and microorganisms, and using high solids loadings to obtain high product titers.

Observation of the Spin Hall Effect of Light via Weak Measurements

TL;DR: The spin-dependent displacement perpendicular to the refractive index gradient for photons passing through an air-glass interface is detected, indicating the universality of the effect for particles of different nature.

Variation in cancer risk among tissues can be explained by the number of stem cell divisions

TL;DR: It is shown that the lifetime risk of cancers of many different types is strongly correlated with the total number of divisions of the normal self-renewing cells maintaining that tissue’s homeostasis, suggesting that only a third of the variation in cancer risk among tissues is attributable to environmental factors or inherited predispositions.

From supramolecular chemistry towards constitutional dynamic chemistry and adaptive chemistry

TL;DR: Supramolecular chemistry considers chemical objects and systems capable of responding to external solicitations by modification of their constitution through component exchange or reorganisation, and opens the way towards an adaptive and evolutive chemistry, a further step towards the chemistry of complex matter.

Raman spectrum of graphene and graphene layers.

TL;DR: This work shows that graphene's electronic structure is captured in its Raman spectrum that clearly evolves with the number of layers, and allows unambiguous, high-throughput, nondestructive identification of graphene layers, which is critically lacking in this emerging research area.

Finding and evaluating community structure in networks.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the algorithms proposed are highly effective at discovering community structure in both computer-generated and real-world network data, and can be used to shed light on the sometimes dauntingly complex structure of networked systems.

A programmable dual-RNA-guided DNA endonuclease in adaptive bacterial immunity.

TL;DR: This study reveals a family of endonucleases that use dual-RNAs for site-specific DNA cleavage and highlights the potential to exploit the system for RNA-programmable genome editing.

Understanding the Warburg Effect: The Metabolic Requirements of Cell Proliferation

TL;DR: It is proposed that the metabolism of cancer cells, and indeed all proliferating cells, is adapted to facilitate the uptake and incorporation of nutrients into the biomass needed to produce a new cell.
