Abstract

Raman spectrum of graphene and graphene layers.

TL;DR: This work shows that graphene's electronic structure is captured in its Raman spectrum that clearly evolves with the number of layers, and allows unambiguous, high-throughput, nondestructive identification of graphene layers, which is critically lacking in this emerging research area.
Journal ArticleDOI

Finding and evaluating community structure in networks.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the algorithms proposed are highly effective at discovering community structure in both computer-generated and real-world network data, and can be used to shed light on the sometimes dauntingly complex structure of networked systems.

A programmable dual-RNA-guided DNA endonuclease in adaptive bacterial immunity.

TL;DR: This study reveals a family of endonucleases that use dual-RNAs for site-specific DNA cleavage and highlights the potential to exploit the system for RNA-programmable genome editing.

Understanding the Warburg Effect: The Metabolic Requirements of Cell Proliferation

TL;DR: It is proposed that the metabolism of cancer cells, and indeed all proliferating cells, is adapted to facilitate the uptake and incorporation of nutrients into the biomass needed to produce a new cell.

A 3D-printed, functionally graded soft robot powered by combustion

TL;DR: Using three-dimensional printing to fuse together multiple materials to manufacture a combustion-powered robot whose body transitions from a rigid core to a soft exterior, which is able to perform untethered jumping and also enhances performance.

Cell Type–Specific Loss of BDNF Signaling Mimics Optogenetic Control of Cocaine Reward

TL;DR: Examination of the roles of the two subpopulations of nucleus accumbens projection neurons in cocaine reward shows that deletion of TrkB selectively from D1+ or D2+ neurons oppositely affects cocaine reward, providing insight into the molecular control of D1- and D2-containing neuronal activity as well as the circuit-level contribution of these cell types to cocaine reward.

Independent Codes for Spatial and Episodic Memory in Hippocampal Neuronal Ensembles

TL;DR: Hippocampal neurons were recorded under conditions in which the recording chamber was varied but its location remained unchanged versus conditions inWhich an identical chamber was encountered in different places, suggesting independent encoding schemes may enable simultaneous representation of spatial and episodic memory information.

Video-Rate Far-Field Optical Nanoscopy Dissects Synaptic Vesicle Movement

TL;DR: This study demonstrates the emerging ability of optical microscopy to investigate intracellular physiological processes on the nanoscale in real time and map and describe the vesicle mobility within the highly confined space of synaptic boutons.
