Abstract

Global Assessment of Organic Contaminants in Farmed Salmon

TL;DR: It is shown that concentrations of these contaminants are significantly higher in farmed salmon than in wild, and consumption of farmed Atlantic salmon may pose health risks that detract from the beneficial effects of fish consumption.

Finding functional features in Saccharomyces genomes by phylogenetic footprinting.

TL;DR: Comparison of genome sequences of six Saccharomyces species allowed us to revise the catalog of yeast genes and identify sequence motifs that may be targets of transcriptional regulatory proteins.

Toward high-resolution de novo structure prediction for small proteins.

TL;DR: The prediction of protein structure from amino acid sequence is a grand challenge of computational molecular biology and the primary bottleneck to consistent high-resolution prediction appears to be conformational sampling.

Detection, Stimulation, and Inhibition of Neuronal Signals with High-Density Nanowire Transistor Arrays

TL;DR: Electrical properties of hybrid structures consisting of arrays of nanowire field-effect transistors integrated with the individual axons and dendrites of live mammalian neurons, where each nanoscale junction can be used for spatially resolved, highly sensitive detection, stimulation, and/or inhibition of neuronal signal propagation are reported.
Journal ArticleDOI

A test of climate, sun, and culture relationships from an 1810-year Chinese cave record.

TL;DR: The sign of the correlation between the AM and temperature switches around 1960 is suggested, suggesting that anthropogenic forcing superseded natural forcing as the major driver of AM changes in the late 20th century.

Raman spectrum of graphene and graphene layers.

TL;DR: This work shows that graphene's electronic structure is captured in its Raman spectrum that clearly evolves with the number of layers, and allows unambiguous, high-throughput, nondestructive identification of graphene layers, which is critically lacking in this emerging research area.

Finding and evaluating community structure in networks.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the algorithms proposed are highly effective at discovering community structure in both computer-generated and real-world network data, and can be used to shed light on the sometimes dauntingly complex structure of networked systems.

A programmable dual-RNA-guided DNA endonuclease in adaptive bacterial immunity.

TL;DR: This study reveals a family of endonucleases that use dual-RNAs for site-specific DNA cleavage and highlights the potential to exploit the system for RNA-programmable genome editing.

Understanding the Warburg Effect: The Metabolic Requirements of Cell Proliferation

TL;DR: It is proposed that the metabolism of cancer cells, and indeed all proliferating cells, is adapted to facilitate the uptake and incorporation of nutrients into the biomass needed to produce a new cell.
