Abstract

Long-Term Monitoring of Bacteria Undergoing Programmed Population Control in a Microchemostat

TL;DR: The microfluidic bioreactor enabled long-term monitoring of unnatural behavior programmed by the synthetic circuit, which included sustained oscillations in cell density and associated morphological changes, over hundreds of hours.
Journal ArticleDOI

Electrostatic control of ions and molecules in nanofluidic transistors.

TL;DR: The results illustrate the efficacy of field-effect control in nanofluidics, which could have broad implications on integrated nanof LU circuits for manipulation of ions and biomolecules in sub-femtoliter volumes.

Targeting mitochondrial reactive oxygen species as novel therapy for inflammatory diseases and cancers

TL;DR: Recent understanding of how mitochondria generate and regulate the production ofmtROS and the function of mtROS both in physiological and pathological conditions are updated and newly developed methods to probe or scavenge mtR OS are described.

Carbonic Anhydrase as a Model for Biophysical and Physical-Organic Studies of Proteins and Protein–Ligand Binding

TL;DR: Carbonic anhydrase is a protein that is especially well-suited to serve as a model in many types of studies in biophysics, bioanalysis, the physical-organic chemistry of inhibitor design, and medicinal chemistry.

Molecular basis of metal-ion selectivity and zeptomolar sensitivity by CueR

TL;DR: An unusual buried metal-receptor site in CueR restricts the metal to a linear, two-coordinate geometry and uses helix-dipole and hydrogen-bonding interactions to enhance metal binding, which is rare among metalloproteins but well suited for an ultrasensitive genetic switch.

Raman spectrum of graphene and graphene layers.

TL;DR: This work shows that graphene's electronic structure is captured in its Raman spectrum that clearly evolves with the number of layers, and allows unambiguous, high-throughput, nondestructive identification of graphene layers, which is critically lacking in this emerging research area.
Journal ArticleDOI

Finding and evaluating community structure in networks.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the algorithms proposed are highly effective at discovering community structure in both computer-generated and real-world network data, and can be used to shed light on the sometimes dauntingly complex structure of networked systems.
Journal ArticleDOI

A programmable dual-RNA-guided DNA endonuclease in adaptive bacterial immunity.

TL;DR: This study reveals a family of endonucleases that use dual-RNAs for site-specific DNA cleavage and highlights the potential to exploit the system for RNA-programmable genome editing.

Understanding the Warburg Effect: The Metabolic Requirements of Cell Proliferation

TL;DR: It is proposed that the metabolism of cancer cells, and indeed all proliferating cells, is adapted to facilitate the uptake and incorporation of nutrients into the biomass needed to produce a new cell.
