Abstract

Photoremovable Protecting Groups in Chemistry and Biology: Reaction Mechanisms and Efficacy

TL;DR: The review covers the knowledge on photoremovable protecting groups and includes all relevant chromophores studied in the time period of 2000–2012 and the most relevant earlier works are discussed.

RNAi-Mediated Targeting of Heterochromatin by the RITS Complex

TL;DR: The purification of an RNAi effector complex termed RITS (RNA-induced initiation of transcriptional gene silencing) that is required for heterochromatin assembly in fission yeast is described and a mechanism for the role of the RNAi machinery and small RNAs in targeting of heterochROMatin complexes and epigenetic genesilencing at specific chromosomal loci is suggested.

Evolutionarily conserved and nonconserved cellular localizations and functions of human SIRT proteins.

TL;DR: The notion that multiple human SIRT proteins have evolutionarily conserved and nonconserved functions at different cellular locations is supported and the lifespan of normal human cells, in contrast to that of lower eukaryotes, cannot be manipulated by increased expression of a single SIRT protein.
Journal ArticleDOI

Impact of shale gas development on regional water quality

TL;DR: Improved understanding of the fate and transport of contaminants of concern and increased long-term monitoring and data dissemination will help effectively manage water-quality risks associated with unconventional gas industry today and in the future.

Raman spectrum of graphene and graphene layers.

TL;DR: This work shows that graphene's electronic structure is captured in its Raman spectrum that clearly evolves with the number of layers, and allows unambiguous, high-throughput, nondestructive identification of graphene layers, which is critically lacking in this emerging research area.

Finding and evaluating community structure in networks.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the algorithms proposed are highly effective at discovering community structure in both computer-generated and real-world network data, and can be used to shed light on the sometimes dauntingly complex structure of networked systems.

A programmable dual-RNA-guided DNA endonuclease in adaptive bacterial immunity.

TL;DR: This study reveals a family of endonucleases that use dual-RNAs for site-specific DNA cleavage and highlights the potential to exploit the system for RNA-programmable genome editing.

Understanding the Warburg Effect: The Metabolic Requirements of Cell Proliferation

TL;DR: It is proposed that the metabolism of cancer cells, and indeed all proliferating cells, is adapted to facilitate the uptake and incorporation of nutrients into the biomass needed to produce a new cell.
