Abstract

Efficient step size selection for the tau-leaping simulation method

TL;DR: An improved procedure for estimating the largest value for tau that is consistent with theory and more accurate, easier to code, and faster to execute than the currently used procedure is presented.
Journal ArticleDOI

Statistical mechanics of networks.

TL;DR: This work studies the family of network models derived by requiring the expected properties of a graph ensemble to match a given set of measurements of a real-world network, while maximizing the entropy of the ensemble.

Formation of monodisperse bubbles in a microfluidic flow-focusing device

TL;DR: In this paper, a method for generating monodisperse gaseous bubbles in a microfluidic flow-focusing device is described, where bubbles self-assemble into highly ordered, flowing lattices.

Major Dissociation Between Medial and Lateral Entorhinal Input to Dorsal Hippocampus

TL;DR: This work has recorded multiple single units from the hippocampus and the medial and lateral entorhinal areas of behaving rats, demonstrating a fundamental dissociation between the information conveyed to the hippocampus by its major input streams.

Synthetic Lipid Membrane Channels Formed by Designed DNA Nanostructures

TL;DR: In single-channel electrophysiological measurements, the authors found similarities to the response of natural ion channels, such as conductances on the order of 1 nanosiemens and channel gating, and show that the synthetic channels can be used to discriminate single DNA molecules.

Raman spectrum of graphene and graphene layers.

TL;DR: This work shows that graphene's electronic structure is captured in its Raman spectrum that clearly evolves with the number of layers, and allows unambiguous, high-throughput, nondestructive identification of graphene layers, which is critically lacking in this emerging research area.

Finding and evaluating community structure in networks.

TL;DR: It is demonstrated that the algorithms proposed are highly effective at discovering community structure in both computer-generated and real-world network data, and can be used to shed light on the sometimes dauntingly complex structure of networked systems.
Journal ArticleDOI

A programmable dual-RNA-guided DNA endonuclease in adaptive bacterial immunity.

TL;DR: This study reveals a family of endonucleases that use dual-RNAs for site-specific DNA cleavage and highlights the potential to exploit the system for RNA-programmable genome editing.

Understanding the Warburg Effect: The Metabolic Requirements of Cell Proliferation

TL;DR: It is proposed that the metabolism of cancer cells, and indeed all proliferating cells, is adapted to facilitate the uptake and incorporation of nutrients into the biomass needed to produce a new cell.
