Structural and Functional Analysis of the D614G SARS-CoV-2 Spike Protein Variant.

TLDR
It is shown that D614G was more infectious than the ancestral form on human lung cells, colon cells, and on cells rendered permissive by ectopic expression of human ACE2 or of ACE2 orthologs from various mammals, including Chinese rufous horseshoe bat and Malayan pangolin.

Evolution of the SARS-CoV-2 genome and emergence of variants of concern

TL;DR: A large-scale whole-genome sequencing of the SARS-CoV-2 genome since its identification in late 2019 has identified many sequence changes and the emergence of novel strains, each described by co-segregation of a particular set of sequence variations as discussed by the authors.

D614G mutation alters SARS-CoV-2 spike conformational dynamics and protease cleavage susceptibility at the S1/S2 junction

TL;DR: Cryo-EM structures, antigenicity and proteolysis experiments suggest altered conformational dynamics resulting in enhanced furin cleavage efficiency of the G614 variant, and allosteric effect of changes at the S1/S2 junction on RBD dynamics is revealed.
Journal ArticleDOI

Structural and functional insights into the spike protein mutations of emerging SARS-CoV-2 variants.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors focused on the current circulating variants of SARS-CoV-2 and the structure-function analysis of key S protein mutations linked with increased affinity, higher infectivity, enhanced transmission rates, and immune escape against this infection.
