Swift and NuSTAR observations of GW170817: detection of a blue kilonova

Phil Evans, +65 more
TL;DR: Ultraviolet and x-ray observations of a binary neutron star merger show a hot kilonova but no jet along the line of sight, which avoids both obscuration from the heaviest elements in the orbital plane and a direct view of any ultrarelativistic, highly collimated ejecta.
Journal ArticleDOI

Calibration of the NuSTAR High Energy Focusing X-ray Telescope

TL;DR: In this paper, a piece-wise linear spline function was used to modify the vignetting response of the Crab as the primary effective area calibrator, and the achieved residuals for all off-axis angles and energies, compared to the assumed spectrum, are typically better than 2$\% up to 40\,keV and 5--10\,\% above due to limited counting statistics.
Journal ArticleDOI

Localization and broadband follow-up of the gravitational-wave transient GW150914

B. P. Abbott, +1622 more
TL;DR: In this article, the sky localization of the first observed compact binary merger is presented, where the authors describe the low-latency analysis of the LIGO data and present a sky localization map.
