Abstract
During the past decade, design-based research has demonstrated its potential as a methodology suitable to both research and design of technology-enhanced learning environments (TELEs). In this paper, we define and identify characteristics of design-based research, describe the importance of design-based research for the development of TELEs, propose principles for implementing design-based research with TELEs, and discuss future challenges of using this methodology. Developing Sociolinguistic Competence through Intercultural Online Exchange.

TL;DR: This article investigated whether computer mediated communication (CMC) intercultural exchange offers the conditions necessary for the development of the sociolinguistic competence of second language learners in French-English learners.

The design of a virtual patient based learning model as a process to improve second language learning and cultural competence for healthcare professionals

TL;DR: The results of the research after implementation of design-based research methodology show that the VPBLM offered value and motivation to students learning Spanish and cultural competency with implications for application across broader educational contexts.

Giving Flexible Learners a Head Start on Higher Education: Designing and Implementing a Pre-induction Socialisation MOOC

TL;DR: In this article, a five-week pre-induction socialisation MOOC that facilitates successful transition into higher education for flexible learners is presented. But the MOOC targets prospective learners during early parts of the study life-cycle, when they are considering entry into Higher education and may benefit from advice about how to effectively prepare.

A Narrative Review of Design-Based Research in Engineering Education: Opportunities and Challenges

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors identify, describe, and critically examine emerging use of design-based research in engineering education, focusing on problems studied, interventions designed, participant populations and learning contexts, research methods employed, form(s) of the research findings, and limitations of the literature.

Design Experiments: Theoretical and Methodological Challenges in Creating Complex Interventions in Classroom Settings

TL;DR: The lion's share of my current research program is devoted to the study of learning in the blooming, buzzing confusion of inner-city classrooms, and central to the enterprise is that the classroom must function smoothly as a learning environment before the authors can study anything other than the myriad possible ways that things can go wrong.

Participatory Action Research

TL;DR: Whyte as discussed by the authors discusses the role of the social scientist in participatory action research in agricultural research and development in the context of agricultural data collection and data sharing in the field of agricultural research.

Design Experiments in Educational Research

TL;DR: Design experiments have both a pragmatic bent and a theoretical orientation as mentioned in this paper, developing domain-specific theories by systematically studying those forms of learning and the means of supporting them, and the authors clarify what is involved in preparing for and carrying out a design experiment, and conduct a retrospective analysis of the extensive, longitudinal data sets generated during an experiment.
